Breather tube color/finish on 70 Judge Ram Air III
Anyone able to post a picture of their breather tube that runs from the passenger side valve cover to the lower ram air pan? Anyone know paint or coating to apply to be factory correct? Mine is somewhat rusted/discolored and I would like to refinish it. Thanks for your help! Jimmy

I've attached two pictures. One of an original Ram Air IV and another from a restored Ram Air IV. You can see that the original car appear to have a natural steel colored breather tube running from the valve cover to the air cleaner assembly. However it is most likely that the black paint to protect the steel has been worn away. It is believed that these tubes were painted black and most concourse restorations paint them. The second picture shows the painted vent tube.

Thanks Wakepowell! Exactly what I needed. Jimmy

If you really want to get technical it was painted a greenish steel color. I have a couple NOS ones with the part number sticker on them and they are definitely not black or steel colored.
|
Would you take a photo of it? Thanks, Jimmy

I agre with Ram4king, they were a dark greenish color. I sold an NOS one at Norwalk last year.

and
is the clip holding the filter in the air cleaner the green tint also?

I don't think the greenish color is paint, I think its some kind of plating (zinc or tin) with a chromate conversion added to prevent white rusting.

455 HO air cleaner assembly in the box. I will look at the clip when I get home tonight for you. |
Anyone have one for sale? Sounds like I probably could never get mine back to the correct finish. Thanks, Jimmy

They are black zinc

Regardless, an NOS air cleaner will have the clip plating/color of the year produced. |

Here is my original non-restored breather tube on my Judge. It appears to be not painted, rather has a thin gray-black-ish plating (black zinc?),but it is 47 years old and shows its age. I'm not an expert on plating at all, and sorry about the quality of the picture.

Thanks SD,
I have a friend with 69 Judge that has a very similar appearance to what yours looks like. Wonder if the NOS ones were done at a different time/finish or if time/heat has turned the greenish color to the blackish gray? Jimmy |
I've owned the car since '74 and the tube has always looked like this. There are great B&W pictures of '70 RA systems in a lot of the period magazines and they look similar...not black, but a dark gray.
