glove box door locked shut
 

68 lemans convert - I have the key, but apparently the lock is broken on the inside, the entire key just spins around. This was working, but just broke. I can't get the glove box open now. Do I need to drill out the lock and hope it will release the lock?

Is the key turning or is the lock cylinder turning?

i think the key is turning. it feels normal, but then extends all the way around when turning it

i think I know what to do. I have to get the bezel around the lock loose somehow and spin it off, freeing up the lock. i do not want to mar the wood grain on the glove box door however. any tips or ideas on what tool to use? I have a spare bezel so i can scratch it.

honestly. it sounds like your whole locking mechanism is S.O.L. I say get some titanium drill bits and drill it out stepping up in width until it finally falls apart, then just get a new locking mech for the box.

If you didn't mind destroying the cardboard inner box you could probably reach up from the bottom and hold the cylinder stationary while you/someone turned the key to retract the plunger.
Although ... I think if it's an AC car that might be more difficult as I think there is a duct that would be in the way.

You may be able to get your hand above the cardboard liner (depending on how limber or if you have small hands) to release the lock/latch......maybe with the radio out there may be enough room?

If it was mine & I didn't want to risk damaging the wood grain or the door I would sacrifice the cardboard glove box liner & go in from the backside. I'm pretty sure replacement cardboard boxes are available but if you cut it carefully you may be able repair/reuse it once you have it opened.

Yep, the inner boxes are available and not every expensive, and pretty nice.

The solution was to drill out the lock cylinder. The glove box popped open. No damage to door, wood grain or insert. The crazy thing was, the spring inside the lock housing that controls the latch, which holds the tab up to keep it closed was bent upward and wouldn't allow the cylinder to change the position of the tab to allow it to open. Luckily I had a spare glove box door with a lock and was able to replace the lock cylinder and housing. Just don't have a key for it now Thanks for the help!.
