I picked a nice used one up at an old salvage yard yesterday. Compare this one to the blue one I posted..

I don't know. The blue one looks like a piece of black vinyl material has been upholstered onto the lid and then colored with some blue vinyl paint.

It's different from 2 original 79 lids that I have. The material on mine is not vinyl. It's a molded rubber cover that slips over the plastic panel. It has sponge rubber adhered to the underside of the rubber cover where your arm lays for cushioning.

The photos below are from a Norwood built 79 TA. The material is short along the fold-over and secured with only a few tiny staples. You can also see that the tan color was painted on. I have another one from a Van Nuys 79 TA that looks similar, but there are no staples. Because it's molded, it stays in place. Interestingly, the Van Nuys one is light blue, but the color is not painted on. It's made of blue rubber.

I don't know if earlier years were made differently.

I have a buckskin one from a 76, GM, no staples, no photobucket- no pis, sorry. No fasteners at all.

The black plastic look off too, the two I have doesn't have the X

77 Canamman 07-19-2017 09:49 PM

The one I posted is an original, as are Grand Am's. Mine came from a car that has sat since the early 90's. The X might have been added in later production. The large amount of staples does not appear to be correct.

What have you done to replace the hinge part of the top?

77 Canamman 07-20-2017 09:49 PM

The only way to fix the "hinge" is to source a new console box:

or NOS:

Mine was fine, just the vinyl lid was replaced by a previous owner with a cheap POS urethane repro with incorrect grain.
