TH-400 ID Plate Questions
 

Here is a photo and short video clip of the transmission serial plate on my TH-400. Looks to me like it is "74PZ-3072" which would be correct for my car. But at the top right you can see where it looks like an H or maybe a D has been changed to a Z with a black marker. Any ideas? Wasn't the PH for V8, 455 4 BBL Police vehicles?

What is the partial VIN on the tranny?

Not sure John, I haven't had it out or been able to get a look at it with mirrors yet to confirm it. Is it the stamping in the lower part of the tag that determines what it was in originally, or is it the two big letters on either side of the top of the tag?

They should match.

Probably the have a blank 'PZ' plate then stamp the id stuff on it when tranny is being installed.
(or whatever plate is needed like PD, PC, etc)

The partial VIN would have the plant where the car was built.
If it wasn't a 'N' then it's not an original plate.

The 3072 is a sequential number of some kind. Even very rare application T400's have fairly large numbers even early in the production year, so it's not like the above trans is the 3042nd PZ of the '74 model year.

The 3072 will not match with your cars VIN. The partial VIN is faintly stamped on the drivers side pan rail of the T-400, the area will have to cleaned well to read the partial VIN.

Thanks guys. Sounds like the mystery will have to wait until I drop the transmission to change the high-stall converter installed by a previous owner. I plan to do that this winter after the MCACN show. I will give the case a good cleaning and get better photos of the markings, etc. Very possible that this is not the original trans, but I'm encouraged by the 74 stamp and the Z stamp. Like John, I'm confused by the Z marked through the D on the tag. Here's to hoping that the VIN matches.
