1967 670 cylinder head stampings

Alright guys, I have been trying to figure this out for a while and am hoping you might be able to assist.
There's no question that Pontiac used 670 cylinder heads on its 400 and 428 in 1967, and those intended for the 400 Ram Air were equipped with special valves and springs. Nunzi tells me that he recalls Ram Air-spec 670s being identified by a small "X" stamped into the dime-sized disc over the center exhaust ports. I've been looking at 670s for a few years, photographing them as needed. I have never found an "X" but I also haven't been able to document an original '67 Ram Air GTO that unquestionably retains its original cylinder heads to verify it. When speaking of 670s in general, I have found most are blank or so rusty that any stamping is undetectable. My search reveals a recurring trend, however, and that's a small "Z" stamped into some. Has anyone else ever come across this on their 670s? Looking at vintage parts manual, Pontiac shows two part numbers for the 670 cylinder head. The 9788067 is found on all 1967 400s (except second-type Ram Air, obviously) and 428 HO. The 9788066 is limited to the basic 428 4bbl. Undoubtedly there are different components used to comprise the different part numbers (such as valve springs) that require separate part numbers to differentiate cylinders heads produced using the same basic 670 castings. This may be of significance and directly related to the stamping, but I don't have a 67-dated parts catalog to determine. So has anyone else found 670s stamped with any characters and/or know of its significance? |

The 670,s that I have came off a 428 and they have no stamping.

To those posting in reply to Rockys question here about info on your head I would like to request that you also provide the casting date off both heads if your able to.

Mine has the Z. Casting date H316. The other head i'll need to clean some more. It was cast on H246.

My set is date code C137 (both heads). They both have a 'Z' stamped on the left pad.
Both heads are on a WZ block cast Dec 66. That engine was in a 1968 GTO RA II car when we bought it in 1987. My 670s where cast on J206 and J226, and both have a clearly definded Z stamping on the forward most round pad .
From what I recall when I got these back in 74 was that they where off a standard non RA 400 , I guess we are now in search for what the Z stamping was done for. |

I have two sets, both are the original engines to my June built GTO and June built Firebird. Neither sets of heads have stampings at all.

Thought this one had a #7. But, I assume now, that it is a Z, with part of the bottom leg not showing up, for whatever reason. Not mine. No date.

So based on what's being presented here along with what I've found in my past research, it almost seems as if the "Z" may have been used to visually identify standard 670 castings before the 97/997 were introduced in approximately May 1967. So what about the "O" that Old Goat Racer found? Maybe a 428 casting? And if so, how does it differ? And the last point that it brings up, I know that Pontiac used specific components for manual-trans applications (like valve seals and hardened spring shields depending upon the model year). Could these stamps have been related to that? So many questions. Where's the elusive document that explains all this?! |

no stampings that i can see and they are pretty decent shape so not rusted that they cant be seen.. date code E297 F017 5/29/1967 & 6/01/1967

Ducks goat and 77 Poncho , I see the remnant of a O in atleast one each of your heads.
