couple of 68-69 headlight actuator questions
 

1) Should the rubber dust boot on the headlight actuators suck in? I believe there is some kind of vacuum leak within the actuator pod causing the rubber dust boot on the shaft to suck inward.
2)On the passenger side actuator, should the helper spring be the same distance from the actuator shaft? I am trying to determine if something is tweaked with my assembly, My spring is makes contact with the shaft on the passenger side assembly.
Any input would be appreciated.

I think when they do that it means there is a leak where the rod enter the actuator ... so the boot is trying to hold the vacuum.

Here is a pic of the springs ... looks like the spring is closer on the passenger side ... in this photo looks like Driver side is hooked from the outside, passenger from the inside ... which would put the spring closer to the actuator.

I've got a larger version of the photo here, I enhanced it ...

The springs are the same, so in order for the top hook to be facing OUT, on BOTH sides of the car ... that means the lower hook must be reversed from one side to the other ... so one has to hook in from the actuator side, the other has too hook in from the engine side.

There are two seals. If you pull the dust boot loose you’ll see the smaller boot that seals the vacuum in. You’re right — if the dust boot is getting sucked in the inner boot is leaking. Ames has them.

If you buy repro seals you might want to get a few spares... they are thinner than the factory ones and have a high failure rate.
