68 GTO 400 2 bbl.
 

Hi, guys. Have a shot at buying a 68' 400-2bbl. very nice shape was rebuilt about 10 years ago and still looks great, has almost 30,000 on it.. bucket seat, column shift model. Mid teens price. Was wondering how rare these are. I'm an old gray beard motorhead from the muscle car era and have had a lot of cars over the years, but didn't know a single 2 bbl. GTO was ever made.. I know some car options are rare but not popular, and this probably is one of them, but I really like the 68' model year, so it's good for me. Are there a lot of these around now.

These where special ordered as the 400 4bbl was standard fare in the GTO.

Our '68 was a 400 2 bbl, column shift automatic, bucket seat (no console) car. Rally I's with redlines.

Ours was silver with black on the decklid; I clicked your pic just to see if it was the same car.

I had a 68 GTO that was an original 2 barrel 400. Mine was an automatic, highway geared one wheel peal car.

Had a customer that traded at the parts store I worked at that had one.
Pontiac and others were trying to fill every niche in the market (at least that's what myself and some other Pontiac enthusiast's think...).
An economy Hot Rod, I believe it was a lower compression engine also, that ran on regular gas.

I say GO FOR IT! Have an old HOT ROD article by Eric Dahlquist (packed away somewhere) on the '68 GTO's where he mentions the 2bbl GTO with 8.5 compression. Dahlquist preferred the 4bbl engine. 77Trashcan pretty much covered it well. It's an unusual GTO but if it's in good shape and you like it, Go For It. (You won't have to worry about lowering the compression for today's gas!)

Man I like that car, 2 Bbl or not!!! Not too common as far as I know.....

They are rare because they were not popular. I have seen a few, mostly '67's. They came with lazy rear end ratios, and sometimes, lower compression engines. 50 years later, this is all to your advantage as a buyer. Not only are they user-friendly, they are usually cream-puffs, since they were always cruisers rather than street bruisers. Mid teens is a give-away price out where I am....you couldn't buy a paint job for that. If you like it, jump on it. I would.

Never seen a 2bbl 68 GTO in real life, just car shows and paper. Seen lots of LeMans, like my brother's 68. :nerd:

Looks like a good buy - one that will leave you with plenty of $ left over to "fix" that 2 bbl problem...

have not seen it yet ..don't know the codes he just sent the VIN ....it's a little over 200 miles away. Going this weekend. Car is all numbers matching and was repainted the original color.

That’s a great color combo. The 2 bbl is rare but not valuable to most. If it is a good car who cares...
