Looking for 8.2 open carrier and 3.23 or 3.55 gears or just carrier for 3.08
Hello
I have a 65 Lemans and had purchased a used Powertrax no slip locker to install and come to find out it appears that at some point a GM 8.2 carrier was installed in the car. The Pontiac carrier uses a .800" cross pin and the GM .7325" pin which is what my car has. Ideally I'm looking for a open carrier that will work with the stock 3.08 gears but I'd be interested in 3.23 3.36 ,3.55 car has a M20 and will be getting a 455 in the next year or so currently a 6 cylinder. Im located in Canada so the killer may end up being the shipping but interested to see whats available thanks Trevor |

Sounds like you'll be needing a posi unit. If you need an 8.2 BOP posi carrier that will work with 3.08 gears, Auburn makes 'em. I'm not clear whether you have a Chevy 8.2 or a BOP 8.2. They are different. http://www.ronsmachiningservice.net/...-3-23-5420114/ If you have a BOP rear, it might be a good idea to go with at least 3.36 gears. New ones are still sold. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Yukon-Gear-...paAd15&vxp=mtr http://www.ronsmachiningservice.net/...posi-gear-pkg/ The BOP 8.2 will usually hold up OK, with hard street tires. But, I broke a pinion, in a 455 bracket car, with slicks. Switched to 12-bolts & never had any more rear end problems. So, if you ever put sticky tires on your car, behind a 455/4-speed, you might break something. Might wanna consider a rear end upgrade, instead of spending money on an 8.2. Just a thought. |

I've never heard of putting a Chevy 8.2 carrier into an 8.2 BOP housing. So, you may need to get someone to help you make a positive ID on exactly what you have, before spending any more money on it.

I pulled the carrier from the car today. Pinion is 27 spline. Ring gear is mounted with 10 3/8” 24 bolts so from what I can tell it’s a Pontiac 8.2? Attachment 468049Attachment 468050Attachment 468051Attachment 468052Attachment 468053 Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Bringing this back from the dead, still looking for a good used open carrier with 3.23,3.36, 3.55 gears that will fit a 1965 10 bolt rear end that I can use my Powertrax locker with, needs to have a pinion cross shaft diameter of .800". I.m located in Canada dont mind paying shipping as long as it ends up being cheaper than buying brand new

Have access to this in local yard. Black's Auto, dona Ana NM. Decodes to '66 date code, 8.2 in rear end, 3.36 open. PM or more details. Believe this is a true Pontiac rear. Willing to investigate further. Dave S. dona Ana NM 88032
