Back in the day

Talking with a fellow Pontiac buddy and he came across this old picture of his Dads ordered new '68 RA 4spd Drop top with the chrome bumper as he did not like the Endura.
It was the light yellow. Long gone :(

I love the Seagull photo bombing the shot :D

Cool photo of a neat car

16 RA Endura-delete GTOs were built. How many ragtops?

The Boss 12-04-2017 08:05 AM

Jim Mattison currently has an endura delete RA II GTO - rare to be sure.

Cool car, wouldn't stand out in a crowd with those hub caps and that color.

So what happened to it?

I saw one just yesterday going to Ocala.
(don't think it was a GTO, didn't notice if it had scoops)

Light Yellow, top down, going opposite way as me.
Had the chrome bumper and hubcaps.
Then coming back from there saw it again about in the same area going the other way.

:)

Looked sharp, very nice to see the old cars compared to the generic boxes driving now.

:)

Hard to tell for sure ... but looks like it has no chrome trim on the valance ... was this chrome not installed on a GTO when the chrome bumper was used?

north 12-04-2017 11:10 AM

I don't believe any 68's had valence trim, 69 only I believe.

The Boss 12-04-2017 04:42 PM

The 68 LeMans didn't have valence trim but the GTO did.

dataway 12-04-2017 04:46 PM

Pretty sure they did ... at least my 68 did when I bought it in 1976 and still does. Would be great if they didn't ... mine are rough and need to be replaced.

Looks like someone stole his trim, or maybe they didn't install it with the Endura delete.

north 12-04-2017 04:48 PM

I just scrolled through a bunch of pictures on line. Funny how a majority of 68 GTO's don't have the valence trim, but most factory pictures do. Could it have been deleted mid year? Just seems odd that so many don't have them as compared to 69 GTO's that almost all have them.

dataway 12-04-2017 08:02 PM

Most 68 GTO clones don't have them because they only started being reproduced a few years ago. Prior to this, good originals were several hundred dollars. Many disappeared when people were "dechroming" their cars.
Far as I know, they were installed on ALL 68 GTOs ... and a judge will remind you if you bring a 68 GTO to a show without them.
Lots of GTOs without the wheelhouse trim also.

Yeah, Jim told me it was a RA II also, but that would be impossible since it was built at the Fremont plant on 12A. RA I at best.

The Boss 12-06-2017 08:06 AM

I think we're talking about two different cars Scott - pretty sure the blue one was built in Pontiac, Jim bought it out of Norwalk, CT a couple of years ago.

Are my eyes playing tricks on me or is there a woman in the passengers seat making a fist at the camera?

68pongto 12-06-2017 11:29 AM

The one I am talking about is the one he had at Norwalk this year. It has the chrome nose painted body color, no radio, no heater, RA II heads , ect. I talked to him about it, said I saw it at Norwalk. I asked if he built a RA II to run in the F.A.S.T. class, (which he has been running that car, since it has less weight) He said "No, that is a real Ram Air II car". It was only later that I looked at a picture of the trim tag that said it was a December of 67 Fremont car.

I think she has her hand on her face/chin.
Like saying, Come on quit messing around and lets go!

:D

Yeah, I can see that...elbow on the door top.

Not sure where the confusion is Scott but I looked at the car a couple of weeks ago at MCACN in Chicago and looked at the cowl tag. My memory of where & when it was built is/was different than yours.

Jim reads this board almost every day, hopefully he can chime in here and settle the issue.
