what oil filter

I have a '64 GTO that has a '67 pontiac GTO 400 ci. engine with '66 tri-power set up. I have always changed my own oil in my garage, but getting up in years and will take it to a Jiffy lube or Quick lube:3gears: for my oil change now. I use Castrol GTX ultra clean oil and a PH25 Fram filter. My question is I was told Fram filters are not that good now so I want to take my own oil and filter . The cross- check of filters say I can use a Purolator PL25288, although it is smaller in diameter, which works fine I'm not sure the seals are the same. What filter do I need for this application? any input would be greatly appreciated.
THANKS
Frank

Don't use a Fram !

Wix & NAPA Gold are good, & both made by Wix. I've used lots of the NAPA 1258. The Wix 51258 is said to be the same filter.

https://www.fleetfilter.com/filter/51258.html

I think the NAPA is still in the $7-$8 range at my local NAPA store.

Have also bought a couple of the K&N filters, which have the nut on the end.

If these filters are too big for your app, there are several smaller ones that will work. Some of the LS filters will work. Same threads & gasket, with a smaller diameter shell, in long & shorter size.

What I don't like about having someone else do my oil & tire changes, is that they all seem to over tighten everything. I hate that. When I have a tire changed, I make 'em leave the lugs loose, then finish 'em off myself, with a 4-way lug wrench. When I have let 'em tighten the nuts with an impact, most of the time I can't break 'em loose at all, without a long cheater pipe on the 4-way. I've bent several 4-ways because of this.

I've bent several oil filter wrenches, trying to remove filters somebody else put on. I've even had to drive a big screwdriver thru 'em to get 'em off. Hand tight is all that's needed to seal the rubber gasket. But, apparently some guys use a wrench & get it as tight as possible. Also, getting the oil drain plug too tight can be bad. It can eventually lead to stripped threads. I've had to use a long 1/2" breaker bar to loosen some drain plugs. When I tighten a plug, I use a short 3/8 rachet, & don't get it as tight as possible. Only needs to be tight enuff to seal off the hole & not back off. This doesn't require near the torque most use on 'em. I've never had one back off.

Buy your filters in bulk. Get together with your friends and save even more:https://www.fleetfilter.com/

I use the NAPA Gold 1258 filters.

Regardless for what other people tell you never use a Fram.

And no, these guys don't get paid to use them. They also deal with 1/4 million dollar (and up) engines.

"...I use Castrol GTX...and a PH25 Fram filter.

His Fram was not one of the "racing" filters. It's the PF-25 you can buy for $4.

Somehow, I don't think the big boys would use one of the $4 Fram filters.

But, for those who like 'em, they're cheap & readily available.

Actually, I was waiting for someone to say, "But Bob the oil guy said....."

I have used the PH filters in my daily drivers for decades with ZERO issues. Yes, they are an inexpensive filter. However, 99.9% of the time there is a "filter" failure, it was due to the user. Yes, the HP filters are a better filter than the PH filter. And while on the subject, the K&N and the Mobil1 filters are the same filter. The Mobil1 just doesn't come with a nut welded to the bottom.

Seen and heard of to many problems with Fram filters just my opinion

purolator filters have a good reputation, Wally Mart has them here in OK,both in a Motorcraft box, FL-1A, or the purolator box,L30001,i usually buy their morotcraft cause its cheaper, but sometime its out of stock, the FL-1A filter fits a lot of engines,i use it on all 3 of mine, a 1977 catalina police enforcer(400 4bbl), a 1987 5.0 mustang, and my 99 ram 5.9 gas..works on all 3 just fine. There are 2 oil filter studys online, an older one at mini mopar, and a newer one at GM truck central, if you have a couple of hours to kill.

I think you’ll be better off going to a regular mechanic if you’re going to be bringing your own filter and oil.

With all due respect, that filter has a 3/4-16 thread, and fits Fords & Mopars.

The Pontiac oil filter housing has a 13/16-16 thread, such as the NAPA 1258 & AC PF24 has, and some of the smaller LS filters have.

https://www.fleetfilter.com/filter/51258.html

If I'm wrong, somebody please post links showing that they have the same thread.

X10...

And for those claiming that the standard Fram filters are decent - look at lust4speed's photo. Seriously - look at it and tell me you want that crap installed on your car. I sell filters that cost under $2.00 that are better than the Fram PH line (I don't use them on my cars, but they are better). A Wix (NAPA Gold is made by Wix) or ACDelco filter is not much more than the Fram garbage.

Quick lube places are known for a multitude of mistakes and problems. They pay their techs minimum wages and you get what you pay for. The number of times that they over tighten drain plugs and strip the threads is legendary....

Okay I'm taking away your man card :D

I wouldn't use a Fram filter on a bet. They are made like crap, and Mick's pic proves it. There are articles about filter construction all over YouTube and Fram is at the lowest along with a host of others.

I find the Napa Gold /Wix to be the best constructed(Internally).

If you want more capacity and have the room, use the Napa Gold 1049 or the Wix 51049. Its about the same diameter as the 1258 but longer.

"Years ago Fram was a quality filter manufacturer. Now their standard filter (the radioactive-orange cans) is one of the worst out there. These filters are manufactured by Allied Signal, Inc. Please do not buy these filters. By boycotting it, we may be able to cause some change. I have personally had one if these filters fail and actually cause engine damage due to bits of paper and glue floating around in the engine. For some inside dirt on Fram filters, see this email from an Allied Signal production engineer."

Not a recommendation but a fwiw tid bit, I've been told that the Fram high performance filters are different than their 'regular' filter. Example the Fram HP-2 'racing' filter.

AC PF24 for me, no psi drop, never seen any flow issues, and no collapsing. If you can't find those, NAPA/Wix.

A whole lot of LOL in here. But I'll wait for all those class-action law suits to roll in on all those supposedly "bad" Fram filters to see who is right.

Not now and not in 1982 when I had my service station and damn near lost the original engine in my Formula due to a bad Fram oil filter I used during the course of a routine oil change. Assuming it was just a bad one, I went through a few more I had in stock and all of them caused the lifters to make an awful racket upon startup which DID NOT diminish! I then replaced with another brand and immediately the engine was fine. I never used a Fram again until about 2001, when my work van needed an oil change and the only filter they had in stock at the local auto supply was a Fram. I figured it was so long ago I had issues with Fram, they couldn’t still be a problem.

To my horror and disbelief, the Van began making the same lifter racket as my Pontiac almost 20 years earlier and again it DID NOT diminish. I ended driving to the next town to get another brand and immediately after installation, the engine was back to normal.

I’ll NEVER touch a Fram oil filter again.
