Steering column trim
 

I have had the trim around the steering column loose for some time and I think I am missing a piece, like a tension plate or spring. Or am I just installing it incorrectly?

Mine is one piece around the column. Is mine not correct for a 65 GTO???

I have seen that Pontiac sent a service bulletin - where they added some foam tape under the two-piece column cover-thing (technical term). I think I saw that in the resto. guide. Anyway - it was an anti-rattle fix - but I wonder if your assembly might benefit from a little bit of tension supplied by something like a thin piece of foam.

I was doing a search for information on this trim piece on this forum and read that the 65 is a one piece.

I have tighten the nut but there is still a small amount of play. I may have to try the foam/rubber option, makes sense to me.

The one shown is for tilt columns, the one piece for non-tilt.

I don't know if it makes a difference between 64 and 65, but the one pictured is from a 64 non-tilt column.

It will work on non tilt. Tilts have the flange at the bottom welded, does not slip off.

Or visa versa, might have the above bass ackwards

'64 and early '65 Tempests got the 2 pc. design, '65 then was revised to use the 1 pc. design.

To avoid column removal, PMD chose to offer the 2 pc. for service.

No difference for Tilt Columns in the Tempest as far as I can tell.

The big Pontiacs used a different Insulator for Tilt in '64 but I'm not familiar with them. Perhaps Bob was thinking of the big Pontiac?

The change to 1 pc. was described in SCN 65-1, page 5.

Not sure that SCN 3-5, page 37 applies.

But SCN 3-5, page 38 explains the use of the foam pads that were to be installed by the Assembly Plants. If they were not installed, the SCN explains how to add them.

I used a fiber washer and a small metal washer to make up the slack, nice and tight.
