3 point Seat Belts in '64 Lemans Convert?
 

Anyone ever attempted this? I know that the retractors at the floor would likely be a pain for getting into the back and I worry that the shoulder bracket would be too low and a pain as well. But I have an awesome wife with a lovely face. And with a steel dash and lap belts, I believe this set up will just increase head speed in the hopefully never happen collision. I don't have seats in the car right now, so can't really mock up to look at. Anyone done this? Or seen it done? I do want to keep stock seats. (I know, without headrests the whiplash alone might kill ya.)

I would do nothing then.
Trying to design a seat belt (3-Point) system yourself is a very dangerous situation.
Bad enough when you have a roof car and try to guess if the roof mount for a later GTO is ok for a early car.
You have locked yourself out of anything that might work with the "no headrest/ taller seat" deal.

The Shoulder Straps over the seat top hooked to a rear mount location is a good way to have a compressed spine situation in a crash.

I have looked into that deal and this is what I am going to do on my 64 GTO Convertible.

1) I bought a pair of convertible leather seats for a Chrysler vehicle so years ago.
They have a nice black leather that goes well with the rear seats. The seats were designed with the shoulder belt built into the seat back.

So basically all I have to do is mount the seats to the 64 GTO seat tracks. Then I will have a 3 point seat belt in my convertible, (designed by Chrysler Crash Engineers and Seat Engineers).

I want the car/seats for me and my passenger, could care less if the rear seat is not a perfect match for the front seats.

It will not work with the original low back bucket seats. Tom beat me to it but Sebring convertible seats would be the only good and proper way.

I can't manage that feat very often, Chief, and thanks for the concurrence and info on the exact model seats.
I bought my seats from a friend who sold his 64 GTO before installing them. Those seats must still be out there.

They made a boatload of those cars from 1998 to 2013. They went from Sebring to 200 around 2011. One of the best selling convertibles of all time.

Those look like 200 seats. Sebring appear a tad taller.

Maybe, I did a search on sebring seats after looking at several 200 seats and that is what came up. Not an expert on the actual seats jusrt showing the seat belt system installed in the seats themselves.

Not to mention the other benefits of going with that seat, like comfort and butt holding in corners. The justification for safety is the icing on the cake.

How tall is your wife? Mine is pretty short, and I’m not sure if she would reach the dash in an accident. (She refuses to ride in the car, anyways.). If your wife isn’t too tall, maybe you can do the “extra tall guy mod” to move the passenger seat back. Just trying the throw out some ideas.

Thanks for the responses. I guess like so many in this hobby I want to believe that the law of physics doesn't apply to old vehicles. :D I will look into those Chrysler seats.

This is an example of a really poor design from the 60s rally cars. Most DRIVERS shoulders were ABOVE their seat backs.
Real Spine Compression deal in a crash. This is why even the old 3 point Roll bars had a "CROSSBAR ABOVE THE DRIVERS SHOULDERS".
