Quick question about inner fenders.
 

Hey, I'm getting ready to finally put my front sheet metal back on.

I got the little plastic inserts, 4 per side that the fender screws go into inside the wheel wells.

The plastic inserts are about 1/4 inch think towards the fender side. The fender lip where the screws go is all flat. Do those inserts hold the fender away from the inner fender? See wrong to me but I have had it apart for so long I can't remember.

I believe on my 67 I put those into the Wheelwell with the flat part (the part you screw into) facing the tire.

Then that wheelwell lip goes ABOVE up inside the fender lip. so the order is (from the ground up)
Screw, Fender, Plastic insert - Flat side, Wheelwell

Make sense? i don't know if that is what you are unsure about.

Even though there is movement (adjustemnt) in the fender to wheelhouse due to the size of the holes in the fender the screws do not hold that tight. No matter where you put the 2 pieces, between vibration and movement, they will settle into their own place. This is why I believe the factory used nylon nuts and not metal clip or weld nuts.

Be sure that you install the Heater Core cover and blower motor BEFORE you attach the passenger side inner fender.

also a lot easier to plumb the brake lines and install the master before you install the driver's side inner and outer fender.


Just a 'Heads Up'

FWIW, my fenders had some sort of caulk strip placed on the inside of the lip. The purpose was seemingly to seal the "gap" where the inner fender and outer fender came together.

I can't tell you that this caulk strip was original to my Fremont build but I noticed it when I stripped the fasteners from them.

See attached pix. I didn't take any great pix of the caulk strip, I think the 2nd pic shows where the strip was terminated toward the rear of the fender. Hopefully gives you a little idea of what I'm talking about.

I didn't check the Tempest Body Manual but perhaps there is something in there about this caulk strip.

Maybe I am mis-remembering, but you can't get inner fenders off and out once the front sheet metal is on without removing the outer fenders. Therefore, I believe I had them bolted to the fenders when putting the front sheet metal on. Someone else who has done a 65 more recently than me can post on it.

Thanks everyone! I thought of the heater deal. I got the firewall pad & a new heater core. Will get that on first. I think I'm ready now.
rsavage, I thought about bolting the inner to the fender then putting the assembly on the car. I'm kinda about bending something or btaking the plastic clips while wallering it around. Any thoughts are very welcome.
