64-65 4-spd Shifter Hole in Tunnel
 

Anyone have accurate dimensions or a template for locating the shifter hole in the floor tunnel for a 4-speed shifter?

Will gladly pay for a template or section from a parts car if necessary.

Have a non rotted floor section with the inboard seat mounts forward showing the oem cutout from a 64 with man. trans. if needed .

It depends on which assembly plant to some degree.

A couple of the plants, like Kansas City and Fremont, the hole looks pretty clean. For Pontiac Michigan produced cars the hole looks like it was cut with an axe.

Ditto Keith except that based on my Nov '63 Fremont build, Fremont was not real clean, more like they used a Sawzall and it came out pretty raggedy.

At Pontiac for sure and likely at Fremont also, the reason for the difference was whether the cutouts were done by Fisher Body or on the Car Assembly side of the operation.

It appears that at KC, Fisher Body likely made the cutout and did it more cleanly, they were proud of their body fabrication work and did it "professionally".

At the Pontiac Plant, the cutouts were made after they came over from Fisher Body.

That's when Paul Bunyan was tasked with hacking the opening cutout. QC called for him to sharpen his axe every 20th car but he likely didn't think they were serious about that!

If you have an original shifter porch (doghouse) it will only fit perfectly in ONE spot, the right spot. Trace around it at that spot, and cut the hole about an inch and a half smaller inside diameter, so you have a lip to screw the porch onto. I helped a friend on the forum years ago convert his '66 to a 4 speed, and this is how we did it. Took minutes with a cut-off wheel in a small die grinder to do a factory job.
