HELP! SPYDER IDENTIFICATION
 

These boys have been making surprise appearances in my home and garage.

Can anyone identify them.

Wolf spider? We have them around here and they can get pretty big, but aren't common.

That’s best I can come up with too, hoping for a definitive ID.

Do they act aggressive and kind of dance around threateningly when you confront them? I think Wolf spiders do that ... kind of funny to watch. Sometimes rear up on their back legs and try to scare you.

I think that is known as the deadly Western Pennsylvania cellar dweller spider. Feeds on pets and small children. If it is in the garage or cellar you are safe, but if it finds its way into the upstairs living quarters, you must abandon the house like its Chernobyl. I'd like to know what it is too. They have been outside on the Northern facing side of the house in cracks and gaps in driveway and patio slab where they meet house for years. They do make web tubes vs webs.


I’m thinking the swings in temperature have them coming inside for warmth on cold nights?

I have ☠️Killed☠️ About 7 or 8, got one when he was snacking on a dead one, I left as a warning to others who dare trespass here , cannibals!

Not an entomologist but maybe a Brown Recluse??
Get em in my garage too....... seriously I have killed a few in garage as big as a silver dollar. Can’t imagine a bite by one of these would do. We’ be all heard the horror stories
If it can bite, sting or make a mess it’s dead in my garage......period!

They drown in a few seconds when I threw one in the toilet....for someone else to find and get that “shake when you don’t want to feeling”

Wolf spider. No to need to worry.
They like to hang where the eating is good and eat all the little PITA bugs.

We had one of those in our house about ten years ago.
 

It was a GREAT big fat one - body about 1 1/2" x 2 1/2" (not counting the legs).

It was in my parents' bedroom. My Dad was brushing his teeth, getting ready for bed when he saw it out of the corner of his eye. It ran out from under my Mom's dresser and then back underneath. Bedroom lights were off, bathroom lights on, lots of shadows.

Dad spit out his toothpaste and grabbed a magazine or book sitting on the dresser and waited for a moment. Hairy bugger ran back out and SMACK. MY Mom was already in bed, but the smack woke her up and she turned on the lights.

It was (had been) a FEMALE Wolf spider - and had been carrying HUNDREDS of baby wolf-pup spiders on it's back. Now that freakin' horde was running helter-skelter from momma's corpse....... :eek:

Dad says it looked like the carpet was moving, there were so darn many babies.

He hollered for my brother to grab the vacuum, while he kept smacking. Luckily it was at the end of the hallway and already had the hose attached - almost like we had this planned out.

I think my Dad vacuumed for about an hour that night before my Mom would let him come to bed.

We've seen several since then out in the yard. They all got an aerosol 'brake cleaner' bath - and their 'little pretties', too.

I usually leave spiders alone. Not too many dangerous ones around here. I did get bit once on the foot and ended up with blood poisoning up to my waist. Doc gave me a shot of penicillian and all was well . He said it was good I didn't wait longer. I was very sick for a couple of days, but began to feel beter when I noticed a lump in my groin (swollen lymph node) That is why I went to the doc. I didn't even know I had blood poison. My buddy is a professional bug killer (exterminator) . He said leave spiders alone if you can. They eat other bugs and other spiders. If you exterminate them then you will need to keep doing it as other bugs or spiders will overpopulate and then you have a big mess with no natural predators. If they are downstairs in the cellar or garage, I let them alone. If I see them in the living area I toss them out or kill em.
