Unknown underdash wires

1 Attachment(s)
Working on buttoning up and testing interior wiring. I have this one 3 wire connector hanging under steering column with no match.

Wires are colored:
Black w orange stripe
Dk Brown
Black w white stripe

Anyone know what this might be for?

I looked through all the 68 wiring schematics and couldn’t find anything.

Looks like a courtesy lite harness to me.

100% Positive that the plug you are showing is for the front cornering light option. If your car does not have them nothing plugs into it. If your car were equipped with the optional cornering lamps there would be an extra plug on your turn signal switch that would plug into it. You most likely have two pigtails on your headlamp loom that are not used. That is where the actual cornering lamps would plug in to.

Thanks, much appreciated!

I don’t have cornering lamps, but this is the original factory underdash harness. So do you know if this pigtail was included on all harnesses?

Not all looms had the extra plug. I have owned and parted out many 68's, I would say about 50% of the dash looms have had the plug. Not sure what the rhyme or reason is behind that, since the cornering lamp option was pretty much available on all the models.

Thanks. Good to know.

The corning lights were an option in 68? I thought that was in 69.

I'll have to look & see if my harness has one. The plug didn't look familiar to me. :)

Yeap, available both years. I have a set in my 68 wagon and two extra sets in boxes.

Sure enough. My harness has that connector. So was it a 68 option & a harness used on other platforms, or were there 68 Tempests/GTO's with these lights? I just have never seen one. Only a few 69's, so I just assumed it was 69's that got them.

Any pictures?

The cornering lights were also available on the big cars too, they just had a different bezel on them. The wire looms are unique the A-bodies only. But I would assume big B-bodies had the extra plugs in their looms too.

A couple of pics of the cornering lamps, you have to cut part of the core support away for the housing to clear. But the there is a template stamped into every core support.

They look more suitable to big cars and they look good on that wagon... I never cared much for them on GTOs.
Very nice collection you have there 68pongto!

Nice collection indeed 68pongto! Greg, we know the middle one is your favorite.

I agree and don’t miss them on mine, they just seem too large for that front spot on the fender.

Yeah, you know it...but I dunno..that wagon is pretty sweet too.

One of my 69 LeMans has them. Neat but I don’t think they add to the appearance of the car. I’m not crazy about them on the GTO where that clean fender (no front emblem) and matching color bumper looks better without the lights.

Interesting that the 68-69 A body cornering lights are basically a recycled 67 full-size option.

I personally think that the 68-69 A body would have been better served with the lower mounted units seen on 69 GP and B body. They mount down at valence level and have the edge of the bezel body color to give them a trimmer look.

Great photo. I'm not gonna get cornering lights, but they do look cool on other folks cars.

not familiar with the cornering connector & wires just hanging out.

Hijack: anybody know what the white under-driverseat 1972 A-body "seatbelt alarm wire" goes to?

Sure learned a lot from one unknown dangling connector. I can see the stamped pattern for the cutouts on my core support as well. Never would of had a clue that was there.

My front headlight harness is an M&H repro bought from Ames. The M12110 for 68 GTO with hideaways includes the wires for cornering lamps whether you want them or not.

Thanks again 68pongto for the answer and info!

KK68, is that an original vacuum can? I still need to buy a new one as mine is rusted in the bottom edge & leaks. based on images alone, it looked like omg was the only supplier with the correct looking ribs.

Just curious.

kk68 05-09-2018 10:52 PM

Yea, I think it’s an original can I bought off eBay years ago. Not original to my car though, mine was rusted through at the lower seam as well.

I think there’s an old thread discussing the look of the original vacuum cans, number of ribs, etc.
