Do you know the part number on the shifter body and the shifter stalk? I can check to see if it's a match. Old Joe :idea: |

they are out there... I'm pretty sure an eBay seller who rebuilds them has a couple listed right now.

Are the shifters different for a console vs. non-console car?

Some of the non-console cars used a different stick, while others got the same stick as the console cars. Here is a picture of both sticks side-by-side.

Both the shifter sticks in the picture had been rechromed, so I stored them wrapped in an old sock with old shifter balls installed in order to protect the threads, so the color of the shifter balls in the picture has no significance as far as application. In 1970 the big black shifter ball was used in both the three and four speed cars, although I'm sure some will disagree with that and say that the leather wrapped shifter knob was used as well. Either way, I do not believe they used a white shifter knob/ball at all, at least not in 1970.

according to the January 2002 High Performance Pontiac article, 1970, and early 1971 Firebirds (generally Formula and Trans Am) which came equipped with a Hurst shifter but without a console were supposed to receive a #7945 shifter arm;
Hurst shifted Firebirds built in that same time frame which were ordered with a console were equipped with a #7244 shifter arm. As shared on post #9, the #7945 shifter arm has the bend in a greatly different location than the #7244 shifter arm. The very same article says that from 1972 through to 1978 all Hurst shifted Firebirds received the #7244 shifter arm. It is worth noting that any Hurst shifted 1979-1981 Firebird would have received a #0800 shifter arm. |
