Oil Leaks
 

So how much of a rear main leak is too much to be allowed to run at the track.I don't want to be irresponsible but I would like to go racing.what can I do to stop it from reaching the ground ?I get a drop like every 30 sec when warm

Hey get a plastic flywheel / convertor cover it will keep the oil contained to the center and will keep the oil from being slung onto exhaust and causing smoke . They were put on factory Pontiac , Oldsmobile and Buick cars most people took them off because it a dust cover basically and some think that without it it it cools the torque convertor but I love mine .. kinda hard to find though

Hello,I worked in GM dealers for about 50 years.When servicing trade-ins we would repair oil leaks.Occasionally when removing flywheel shields we would find a kotex pad glued or taped inside to hide oil leaks.You could try it,maybe it could prevent another racer from kissing the guard rail. :old:

Are you running a synthetic oil, or have you put a Teflon additive in?

Anyone believe in or has used that substance you put in your engine to stop oil leaks?? Suppose to swell the gaskets?? I see a few different companies produce it. Is this snake oil? I have my suspicions that it doesn't work. Thanks, Carmine.

I keep a bag of those in the trailer. Have used them between rounds if timing was tight to get back to the lanes.

You just may have to do what you don’t want and change the seal!

May not be on anyone's list of favorites but it's only as bad as you make it. It can be done in car if need be.

Give yourself a weekend and you'll get it done with time to clean the mess it's likely made already on bottom of car.

If doing in car you usually need to raise the motor some.
Wood chisels make excellent gasket scrapers BTW.

Yes. I've never understood any racer that would knowingly let one drop of oil get on the track. It's just unsafe. I wouldn't want to follow the OP down the track.

I have used pig mats to absorb leaks while at the track when I couldn't repair. Folded one and stuffed it between my distributor and firewall when the gasket decided to start leaking. Got us through a few rounds.

So I won't even try to race with a drip but is this a good idea or bad idea to catch it ? Will bolt to my scatter sheild.adsorbment pad will be changed when,if needed .I will fix the right way this winter....just paper will use aluminium :)
