Divorced choke always open
 

I need some help here. My divorced choke spring is holding the choke plates in the wide open position. The spring is wound over the top pushing up on the rod instead of pulling it down when it's cold. I need to know if this is wrong, broke, or if I'm setting it wrong when I connect the rod.

what year is your carb and or intake 2 or 4 bbl

I think the 2bbls work backwards from 4bbls and the slot for the rod swaps side tooooooooooooooooo

The manifold is 67 and the carb is 69 4 bbl. I did notice that the slot is the opposite side from new 4bbl choke housings from Ames. So your opinion is that I have a 2 bbl choke on a 4 bbl carb? If that’s the case then I need to order the right one.

Scott ... check on that for sure ... I thought it was a 67 change to 68 with the push/pull different side.

I have a piece here that I'm pretty sure is a 67 four barrel unit that has the slot on the other side and also pushes instead of pulls. At least it was attached to a 4 bbl manifold when I got it.

I’m going to have to double check the carb to see if it’s a 69 for sure. It may be a 67, I don’t remember. I know it was off an Olds 455. Either way, the choke needs to pull, not push. Now that I know there’s a difference, I know what is on there is wrong. It really doesn’t surprise after what I found when I tore the motor apart to rebuild it. Thanks for the info guys.

I actual had to think about what a barely pop was for about ten seconds ... getting old.

Here's the numbers...7029253, date code 3099. It's a 1969 Olds 4 bbl. The slot for the rod doesn't look like it can be on the opposite side. Here's a picture of the choke on the manifold and the linkage. Any more help would be greatly appreciated.

they are totally different than a pontiac

does your choke rod off the coil need to pull down to open ?

I didn’t know that the Olds and Pontiac were different. I thought a q-jet was a q-jet. Ya learn something new every day.

The choke rod needs to push up to open the choke plates. The coil is pushing the rod up holding the plate open when it’s cold instead of pulling it down to close it.

I tried calling Cliff but haven’t heard back from him yet.

Somethings up with that last picture.

If the choke plate is wide open...the fast idle cam should be down.

Has it been took apart and the spring re-installed upside down?

I put the choke on the manifold to take the picture, I didn’t set the fast idol to the open position. It wasn’t engaged. If it was taken apart it was done before I had the car. I’ve considered taking it apart myself to reverse the spring.

I talked to Cliff R and he’s looking to see if he has the Pontiac linkage and housing to replace the Olds parts so it it can be set up right.

Here is a photo of an unmolested 68 choke stove.

I found at least half a dozen Pontiac divorced choke assemblies, a couple are in very good shape, but all of them push up on the choke instead of pulling down on it, so wouldn't work with that particular Olds carburetor no matter how they were mounted on the intake.......Cliff

Thanks Cliff. I'm going to have to change the linkage to work with the Pontiac choke, or try to reverse the spring on the one I have. Do you have the correct linkage I need for the right side pull down choke?

An electric choke conversion my be my only other option without having to change carbs.

Here are some pics of several divorced choke brackets. The first pic shows 1967 Pontiac and the 1968-1970 brackets.

The second pic shows 1967 Pontiac compared to an early Buick bracket. Since the hook-up point is forward of center a divorced choke that pushed up will close the choke flap for a cold start........Cliff

Thanks Cliff, that helps. I’m considering converting to an electric choke which might be easier to find instead of linkage. I’ll probably have to buy a while new carb for the linkage.

I was able to remove the coil from the choke housing and reverse it so it pulls down on the left side. I had to grind the end off the coil rod to remove it from the housing which left a problem getting it back together. I used some JB Weld last night and hope that holds. So far so good, it's holding and most important, it's working. It should be good as long as the weld holds.
