'68 vs '69 sport wheel
Are the horn buttons interchangeable?
I know the wheels are slightly different but I'd use the '69 wheel I have if the '68 horn button will interchange. Otherwise, I may sell it. |

Here is what I'm working with... I 'restored' the finish. It's not exactly like the original PMD finish but it does look like wood and not plastic. I was able to simulate some grain and the joints. If I'd known how well the joints were going to show, I would have been neater with them and also placed them in the proper place. That was a boo-boo.

The ‘68 center is 3 different pieces - the collar which screws to the wheel, the base which is held on by the steering wheel nut, and the button which clips to the base. It looks like you have a collar on yours, but the ‘68 collar is unique due to the shape of the spokes toward the center. You might be able to use the ‘69 collar with the ‘68 base and button. I’ll take/find some pics for you for reference.

Wow, I appreciate you going to all that trouble and yes it does help. That's exactly what I needed.
I still don't know if it will fit but I think I'll be able to figure it out, yea or nay, with those pics. Thanks! Couple of questions for you...Are those notches at the wide part of each spoke needed? Also, how wide are the spokes at their widest point. |

Happy to help. As far as I can tell, the notches don't have any functional purpose. At the widest, the spokes are 1-5/16.
I just realized that the collar on my wheel is clocked wrong. The tab that's at 12:00 should be at 4:00. There's a corresponding tab on the back side of the base that I never noticed. However, I can't find my steering wheel puller and the horn seems to work just fine so I guess it's going to stay that way for now. http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...1&d=1538265653 |
Thanks Ken. Same as the '69. I actually think it might work based on what I'm seeing. I'm not sure about other possible differences (for the purist) but from your pics, I think it will work.
As for the collar, as long as the emblem is straight up and down with the wheel centered it should be a non issue. Thanks again! |
I bet the notches are a safety feature ... so the spokes and outer wheel collapse easier in an accident.

The only thing I can think of is maybe the redesigned steering column in ‘69 was able to absorb more of the crash impact?

Scott, since you have an example of each, is there a difference in the wheel itself, like the depth for instance?

I had a 69 wheel on my 68 GTO for years. I used a 68 reproduction kit from Ames on the 69 wheel with no problems.

The 68 wheel is deeper, but I don't know the dimensional difference.

I knew that I had read somewhere over the years that the '68 wheel differed in depth from SOME other year but couldn't remember.

Didn't they start using "collapsible" steering columns around 69? Maybe that's why they did away with the notches.
