Wood steering wheel restoration option
 

I found this guy while searching for steering wheel restoration. Re-molding the wood wheel prices are crazy, usually around $2000. Steering Wheels by Mike charged me $300 to strip, fill and refinish mine. I'm very pleased with the results. I thought it it's a reasonably priced option. WOW! Pretty damn nice there Cardo. $300.00 vs. $2000.00? No brainer. Well done!

On a side note... It always amazes me just how crude this wheels were made. Take a steel slug, weld (in some cases crudely) 3 thin spokes onto it, call it a day and call it safe.

Yeah, that's nice work. I just did one myself using techniques outlined in an old article for guidance. I'm pretty happy with it although the stain is a shade darker than the originals and I added the 'joints' in the wrong locations :rolleyes:.

That looks good too Greg. Someone had already tried to restore mine. It was way too dark, and had several small cracks showing. I decided to let someone with a lot more experience do it vs learning on it. Yours turned out very well.

I just shipped off a '57 wheel today, the go-to guys get $1700. Not an option! Stay tuned.

That looks great Ed. I actually redid mine after posting the pics above. Just lightened it up some and did a gloss clear instead of satin.

I'll have to look Scott. I think I used walnut for the dark. It settles in the 'grain' when you wipe it down then I used a lighter color on top...can't remember what the lighter was right now but I still have it. After it dried, I used a gloss poly.

I did something like that to my Original 68 Wheel casting. Sanded that 1st layer to accent Grain pattern vs Stain.

Is worth being picky in the amount of "Orange" in the 2nd Stain coating to avoid being too dark or too yellow

I had forgotten about this... I looked and the lighter color l finally wound up using was a Minwax stain with gloss poly already blended in. The color was Pecan. I had 4 or 5 different colors lying around but it looked best to me.
