Buffalo Nickel
 

I did some grocery shopping today at Whole Foods and gave out some paper and received back some coins.

I didn’t pay attention at the store, but when I emptied my pockets at home, I was shocked!
In the change I got back was this 1928 Buffalo Nickel in with shiny pennies and dimes.
How did this happen in Oct. 2018?
It’s pretty worn and has a gash in the Indian forehead.

90 year old coin and still in circulation.

Wow that is very cool, maybe the person just before you, or someone that day, gave it to the cashier when they paid, and it hadn’t gone to a bank yet. The person might have had it and never knew it. I almost never look at my coins.

Very nice score.....probably some kid stole it from grandpas coin collection. But I did score one myself about 3 months ago...change from Dunkin Donuts ...1943 War Nickel !! Attachment 495487

About a year ago I was driving somewhere and noticed a 1901 Indian penny in the coin tray of my car. I asked my teenage son about it and he recalled getting it in change and thought it was just a foreign coin....kids these days.

That's cool that it's still in circulation.

Very cool ... the odds of that are very very low at this point in time.

Somebody cleaned out the cushions in the couch in the basement.

This happened up here a few years ago and old rare coins started showing up. Not saying this is what happened here.

I received one about a year ago. Worn so bad, hard to tell what it was.

It's unusual to get one in change these days, but don't quit your day job. :) It's probably only worth about 25 cents.

I occasionally will find a wheat penny in my change, but the most common old coin I get for some reason are Jefferson nickels from the late 1930s or 1940s - I guess they must have been designed so they hold up better than other coins for long term use.

Appears to be a '28-S, looks like the San Francisco "S" mintmark on the reverse, might be worth a few bucks, the gash on the Indian doesn't help the value

Coins are pretty interesting. I have a bunch from my Great Grandfather, but I don't know a whole lot about them. That Buffalo Nickel is cool!

I have one of those old cookie tins filled with old pennies. The thing must weigh 20lbs lol. I don't think there's anything special in the tin, because if there was they'd probably be with the rest of the collection.

Right after I turned 18, some of the other kids I knew in high school started asking me to buy cigarettes for them. I always told them no, except one day a kid asked me to buy him a few packs(he was actually 18 as well but didn't have any ID yet), and the sound of the change jingling in his pocket made me curious about how he was gonna pay me for them.. he produced a large handful of pre-1964 half dollars - most of them in pretty nice shape! I gladly took them and bought the cigarettes with my own money. Still got them of course, along with all the other old/interesting/foreign currency I've gotten over the years.

My fast food job in high school netted me a ton of silver coins, plus some silver certificate $1s and $5s, reds and blues, plus a host of other vintage bills.

When my great aunt passed away in 2010, we discovered that she had saved piles and piles of coins in various places throughout her house, and some of those piles were quite old and contained a lot of silver. Took a good bit of time to sort through all that, but I got to keep all that stuff. Most of the others in my family would have just taken it to the local coin shop and taken whatever they offered for it, but I recognize its value to hang onto for the long run. Through all my ups and downs in life, I'm glad I've always managed to hang onto all that stuff.

Yup...still have my penny collection,I started in 1968. Use to go to the bank and swapped out penny rolls after delivering papers. Got a 1909 VDB too.....but no “s” VDB

My wife had a blue $100.00 Silver Certificate in hers hands at the liquor store where she worked back in the early 90s. I said to keep it and give the till a regular 100.00 in place of it. Well she wouldn't, and wouldn't let me give $100.00 for it. It's the only one I've ever seen. I can only imagine its value today.

As for the Indian head nickels...hang on to them. Even damaged they're worth a few bucks.

Working in a bar part time for 30 plus years I've been handed all kinds of strange stuff ... and yes in most cases it's probably from some kid that robbed Grandpa. Got a full roll of uncirculated 64 silver quarters ... still have them, and seven sequential serial number $1 sliver certificates ... still have them.

Ohh!! that "s" would have made a BIGGG! difference!$$$ Yep..I find mostly the old nichols and dimes some wheat pennies ,,not any old "silver" quarters though!

That's pretty neat! The last 'vintage' silver coin I got back as change was a 1940 Mercury dime. Have gotten Buffalo nickles in change prior to that, but that was in the 1970's. Recently I got a really nice 1918 penny in change....like last year. I always look at the date if it's a wheat-back penny. Most people don't pay attention to the pennies, but a Buffalo nickel really stands out. Pretty cool.......
