1968 Rear seat speaker switch and 8-track
 

A friend of mine, that doesn't use computers, is restoring a 1968 gto with a rear seat speaker and 8-track player. He's trying to hook everything up to finish up his interior and can't figure out how it all connects back together.

The rear seat speaker and 8-track are options that he's added to his car as it didn't come from the factory that way but he's purchased and restored the correct parts.

I've been of little help to him because I have zero experience with the 8-track and rear seat speaker switch.

Does anyone have a wiring diagram that shows the correct want to hook up the wires for the rear seat speaker with the 8-track. The shop manual and restoration guide haven't been any help as there is the same diagram in both but doesn't show how to hook up the options with each other.

When you have an 8 track player you do not use the front/rear switch up on the dash. The front/rear is controlled by the 8 track unit.

Ok, I assume then that he should hook the speaker switch up to the radio like normal and the harness from the 8-track will plug into to the radio which will then control the front/rear speaker?

I believe there is a pretty good diagram in the 68 Shop manual.

If The 68 is like the 69 then the 8 track harness replaces the rear speaker fader switch and everything. The power plug from the dash harness plugs directly to the 8 track harness and then the power flows to the 8 track before going to the radio.

Bear in mind that there are two different 8 track harnesses. The first is for either the AM or the AM/FM mono and as mentioned above the balance knob on the 8 track player controls the speaker fading regardless of if the radio or the 8 track is playing. So to look correct an 8 track car shouldn’t have a dash mounted fader switch.

The second 8 track harness is for cars also equipped with the stereo radio. In this case the radio has a balance bezel on the right side the controls fade when the radio is playing and the balance knob on the 8 track controls fade only for the 8 track.

I have the U58 AM-FM Stereo Radio along with U57 8-Track Stereo Tape Player options on my 68 GTO. The 8-Track is currently out of the car so I thought I’d post a couple pics of front and back wiring plug in case it helps. My AM-FM Stereo radio has the balance on right knob as described in previous post.
