Anyone ever had a top rechromed?

Wonder how they strip the old chrome off the recessed areas.

I am confident people have, but I am also confident that repairing and rechroming an original lid would far exceed the cost of a reproduction chrome lid... which is why I am going to get around to buying a new one for my car.

I would think you're right about that...No one sells the entire breather assy but Ames has the lid. They don't come up often and that looks like a nice one.

I had a top re-chromed last year. It was $225 to strip, repair the rust spots and the 2 dents that were in the lid and then go through the chrome process. The lid tured out great. I know that is considerably more expensive than purchasing a new lid. I know at "Finishing Touch" for them to re-chrome a lid is around $400-$500. I just wanted the original lid that came with my car so I coughed up a little more money on an already blown apart budget.

nope, The Finishing Touch is higher, unless there was a price drop from 10-12 years ago.
I got an estimate from The Chrome Shop a few months back for "around $600". I said thanks but no thanks, I'll keep the repro lid for the time being. He understood.

I had mine rechromed about 2 years ago. Don't have the slightest idea how they stripped the chrome in the recessions, but it came back a lot better than it left. I didn't want to get it 'show' quality, but it passes for really good stock quality. I rechromed the lid because I didn't want to buy an aftermarket lid with the incorrect grooves in them. Also, I wanted a part that was made in the USA and not a Chinese crap metal part.
