301 draw thru turbo on a 350 Pontiac?

I asked this in the street section, probably should've done it here. Has anybody here ever taken a 301 draw thru turbo and modified it to work on a bigger motor like a 326/350 stock Pontiac?

I remember one on here doing a twin setup with these units... username Firechicken ???

I also think he used it on cast rods/piston deal and made a pile of scrap metal.. LOL

I'll look that up, I was thinking that a pair of these would fit (with help) on a Offy dual quad intake.

Twin 301 draw thrus in a 3800lb TA with 068 cammed 400 and 6X heads went 10.50s 15 years ago.

Same turbo setup runs 9.70s today on a KRE Dport headed 455 and driven 40 miles to the track.

There are much easier ways to do this these days...

That setup is fascinating, I can't imagine how complex the throttle linkage for that setup is. What carbs are you using?

firechicken 02-05-2019 05:58 PM

Carbs are 800 cfm brpv qjets used on T type Buicks.

unruhjonny 02-05-2019 06:28 PM

that's a pretty cool setup!

I can't help but think that if you could somehow do it so that an intercooler is put in the mix that with even one turbo and not too much boost, you would see substantial gains...

Sheesh, the replies (that I saw earlier) in the other thread were terrible.

How much boost?

Hey George it took 18lbs to break into the 9s with these little turbos in bad air. That's with a 224/224 HR.

I did grenade one engine pretty bad but not from boost. An overpowered clutch and resulting rev to 7500 on the 1-2 shift with no rev limiter was the cause. I guess the boost was responsible in a way...

I was finally able to pick up the 301 turbo stuff I bought a few weeks ago. My idea was to run two of these turbo units in-line on top of a Offy 2x4 intake. I mocked it up a bit with what I have on hand. I hate to say it but this briefed better in my head before I had the turbo. For some reason I thought the 301 manifolds would work on a traditional Pontiac.

It's a great thought! Your post had me thinking about my '74 350 with 7.6:1 compression...there have to be a lot of them out there just begging for a cheap turbo swap and a set of better pistons.

For some reason I thought the 301 manifolds would work on a traditional Pontiac.

Years and Years ago, I had a pair of JR Round Port Headers that adapted a D-Port head to a Round Port Header. That header system was extremely easy to install/take apart and it used a pair of exhaust manifold 3/8 inch adaptor flanges that bolted on to the head first.

Then the Headers bolted on.

So when the 301 Turbo Engine came out I ordered two of the passenger side manifolds and
it also had the extra bolt at the top of the center exhaust ports, like the JR Headers.

So I just copied what JR headers did and made adaptor flanges to match the heads and the Pontiac Turbo manifolds and bolt positions. No issues with making them work. Problem is the manifolds are not out there any longer.

After that exercise I was able to purchase a pair of factory 1963/1964 Experimental center discharge manifolds that went upward with the exhaust to the RAJAY Turbo Flanges.
Those manifolds were later sold as part of a set of Turbo parts to Randy Williams before he died.

SO Johnny406, it is possible to make those manifolds work on a normal D-port head with a bit of fabrication.

great idea . hope you go forward with it!

Good luck!

Thinking about that dual-quad manifold, I wonder how it would work with 2 4bbl EFI units and twin turbos? I REALLY miss my Turbo Buick sometimes!

A know a guy is using older Pontiac heads and a modified intake on a 301 Turbo TA and he drilled and tapped the center holes (7/16 - 14 I think he said) and loctite'd a bolt in the hole and had them surfaced. They seal with no issues.

agree

SHOULD NOT BE AN ISSUE.

"Skip" (Dudley) McCully (PONTIAC ENGINEER who worked with Tom Nell and Herb Adams) did the swap to a 455 with dual Turbos many, many years ago.
The Draw Thru Carbs are the hard items to find.

I'm new to the forum. I got a great deal on two 301 motors one already built. I'm building a 63 La Mans on an upgraded frame. (already got the tunnel and disk breaks ect.) I still have the original 326. I also got two turbos and might need some advice. This is my retirement project.
