Which Delco Coil do i need?
Looking to use an old stock replacement Delco coil for my Lemans. 389 AFB with points. Do i need the Delco 511 or 512 or either? i Can't seem to find out what the actual difference is.

ACDelco recommends U505 for 1955-74 Pontiac´s.

Looking old stock here. Don't want to use currently made crap coil. I have found sources that state both D 511 and D 512. Can't find what the difference actually is.

The correct original coil for a 65 is 1115214. Is that what you were asking??
"Bill"! |
Bolt on either one and run it. It will be just fine.

I'm thinking geeteeohguy is right. I'm asking which REPLACEMENT Delco Remy Coil is correct for my application. My 2 choices are the D 511 which is part number 1115202 or D 512 which is part number 1115238. I was just wanting to know which one was intended to replace the 1115214 that Bill referred to. I have found listings referring to both, but don't know what the difference is. In fact i don't understand why Delco has soooo many different blasted part numbers for a 12v external ballast coil!

*speculation warning*
probably minute differences in manufacture, and as stock was depleted of one type, then another one became it's replacement. |
The 1964-67 replacement coil was #1115134. (1965 original #1115241, 1966 original #1115037).
1968-74 replacement coil #1115238 was used (1970 original #1115410). Later D512 replaces both. Primary resistance 1.7 - 2.0 ohms @ 75°F Ignition resistor wire 1.32 ohms @ 80°F. D511 is replacement for 6-cyl engines (1965 original #1115184, 1970 original #1115414). Primary resistance 1.4 - 1.7 ohms @ 75°F. Ignition resistor wire 1.80 ohms @ 80°F. Hope this helps some. |
Thank you Kenth! That is exactly what i was looking for. Last night i did find the specs on the coils, but couldn't find the application for certain. I'll be picking up a 512 in the near future.
