Pinchweld molding clip problems
 

So I’m attempting to install the pinchweld molding prior to the top being installed and can’t seem to get them to lay flat when putting them on. I have new clips installed correctly in the molding but when I press them over the pinchweld lip they are loose. I have pictures of when I pulled it apart and it appears that there was butyl under the molding. Did Pontiac do this to hold them inplaceor am I missing a trick here?

When I bought my 67 over 30 years ago, that trim slipped off all the time. When I restored the car 6 years ago, the new clips also allowed the trim to slip off. Those trim pieces are screwed down at the forward ends, but of course only slip onto the pinchweld all around the perimeter. Since the two pieces meet in the middle, and one piece overlaps/envelopes the other (about an inch overlap), I decided to screw down the end of the trim at the "underlap": I drilled a small hole in the piece of trim, formed a countersink shape into the trim, pushed the trim onto the pinchweld, drilled a hole into the pinchweld through the new hole in the trim as a guide, and screwed in a short flathead sheetmetal screw. The other piece of trim covers this screw up and of course since it envelopes it that side stays put as well. The screw was short enough to not interfere with the top material underneath and besides that I loaded up the whole general area with "dumdum" putty anyway. There is a picture in my website of where I put that screw....on the "part 1" section of the convertible top installation page I think....

Thanks Dave, this the same problem except the center is fine where you added the screw. I guess I’ll do the same and put the dumdum or plumbers putty in there.
