A little 64 GTO History

Then Flamme GTO at the Auto Show. Pretty sure that this picture was taken at COBO Hall in Detroit.

Been posted years ago but bringing it back for the newer guys.

One thing I have noticed on those early 64-6 promotional pics is that what appears to be the red stripe on the tire is further out from the wheel than any of the current reproductions. Any ideas?

AG 10-30-2019 08:43 PM

What's the date of that pic?

60sstuff 10-30-2019 09:04 PM

A 64 with a pinstripe.

If that’s the exhaust behind the front wheel, than where’s the muffler?

Same place it always was. They just used a front inlet/front outlet muffler

I thought about actually doing an exhaust like that for my 64 GTO vert before Tom Hand, a couple of other Pontiac guys, and I did the stainless VOE Muffler Project. I just supplied some of the funding.

I think we're ready for the history lesson about this one.

Google only brought up a LeMans version with wire hubcaps , , and a modified GTO with single square headlights.

What's going on under the door/rocker area ?

Side view mirrors are cool. Way ahead of time...

One tidbit: those CIBIE headlamps were very popular on show vehicles, but were not legal for highway use at the time.

I can also confirm we had conversation in the last few years with a gentleman from Chicago that claimed to have had the car all this time. He was a bit skittish and, when pressed for details, went back underground.

I also talked to the guy, maybe he had the car and maybe not, Keith.

He was a bit "sketchy" on some of the details I asked about. I am a bit sketchy on a lot of the details on my 64 GTO these days.

BVZ, to the best of my knowledge, they only did one "The Flamme GTO", ever.

Now for years and years, they said that the Bullet Mustang was gone and they only had the Mustang Camera Car, but we now know that was not totally true.

We need to find the Blue Test Car to go with Tenny's!!!

Tom Vaught 10-31-2019 09:09 PM

I firmly believe that Jack Watson's family still has the car.
Jack passed away some years ago. He hinted around that it was never destroyed.

What emblem is on the rocker? It almost looks like LeManns.

Tom Vaught 11-01-2019 04:48 AM

Probably was a LeMans since The Flamme was the Prototype GTO Show Car.

I see a emblem where the "GTO TRIANGLE" is on the front fender, I see "GTO" type dual hood scoops, etc.

The Show Car pre-dated the actual 64 GTO production cars.
There was no GTO when that show car was built.

Couldn’t figure out how to link the old thread but search Flamme on this forum and you will find it from 2009/2010.

Tom Vaught 11-01-2019 11:09 PM

I READ THRU A BUNCH OF THE OLD POSTS. BOY, WE WERE PASSING AROUND A LOT OF GOOD INFO ON THAT FLAMME THREAD!!!

Too bad that Photo Bucket crap caused a bunch of the photos to be held hostage and you can't see them any longer.

Here's a few more hi-res photos. The shot of the LeMans Flamme on the platform is from the Chicago Auto Show. I believe this was the same display they reused for the 1967 Firebird 400 convertible "Skydiver".

Now those are some cool photos!

I think I like that seat design.

Thanks for sharing.

My apologies for an incorrect photo caption I posted above. I stated the Flamme show car photo was from the Chicago show. It was not, that photo was from the Detroit Auto Show.

THIS is the one I meant to upload (Chicago show), and thanks go out to eagle eye Tom Vaught for noticing the error and alerting me.
