Matching rust on a Pontiac....

So my friend couldn’t get a sticker on his Pontiac...until some rust holes were repaired. The car has a good amount of “Patina “ on it. So I weld on a lower fender panel...and big patches front and rear of wheel on the 1/4 panel. I make a bench mix of Gold and fuzzed it in. My friend sees it....and says it looks good but...it doesn’t match the rest of the car... I said what do you mean....he says , I like the rusty look. I said...leave it with me a day or 2...and I’ll smoke a fat one and see what we can do about that. ..So I used my model train weathering knowledge...and applied it to the Pontiac....He was shocked...in a good way. That was the most fun I’ve had in the last 40+ years of paint and body work.

For those of us who do not live in a totalitarian state: what is this "sticker"? Some kind of inspection sticker so you can drive on the road?

And - rust holes are not ok? But rust appearance is ok?

Seen a Street sleeper prepped with rusty exhaust, lower body, bumper, rearend, whereas the parts were minty at first. Convincing.

Think the recipe was a certain rust color spray paint can, trace colors of other spray, and a gravelguard paint.

Yes.....an inspection sticker....once a year. To make sure the guy coming the opposite way has a safe vehicle. You know...tires with tread...tight steering, lights, and Brakes. I hear the horror stories from my friend in Tennessee.....where there is no state inspection.He said you cannot believe what these Hillbilly’s drive down here.....lol

Many years ago I did 3 '62 Ford Galaxies and a '64 (ish) Vette for a James Cann movie called "Hide in Plain Sight". The 3 Galaxies all had to look identical but not perfectly restored. So, if there was a dent on one, that same dent had to be on all 3. When the cars were done, car "make-up artists" came in and basically un-did everything I and the other guys did. These guys made these cars look like 3 identical old used up cars with rust, more dents, even cracked windshields.

Pretty cool watching them work but sucked because those cars looked pretty damn good before the make-up artists got to them.

On a side note.... James Cann was driving the Galaxie and rammed it into the Vette in the movie.

1:02:16 is where he rams into the Vette. That was painful to watch!

LOL! I forgot he rammed it twice. That Vette was a real POS. It got flatbedded in and back then flatbedding was a rare sight. We had to get it running, brakes as well as body & paint.
