Harmonic dampener rebuildable?
 

Is an original harmonic dampener rebuildable? I have one that the inner machined piece that contacts the seal has cracked and someone attempted to weld it back to the flange. There's no way I trust this, and wonder if anyone has attempted to press the inner piece out, and press a new one in? Is the rubber material that separates the inner piece from the outer available?

There are companies that can re vulcanize those, you could probably do a search...

Tom’s balancer is unique and as rare as hens teeth, a balancer rebuilding expert is the only choice.

Your balancer is a dime a dozen that’s readily reproduced and available new.

I called another balancer rebuilder that Tom had recommended because I had a 421 balancer I wanted rebuilt. This same balancer was used on all non-SD ‘59 -‘67 V8 and 4-cylinder engines, dime a dozen. I called and he told me they don’t rebuild them anymore and he simply sold me a new one, he’s the same supplier for all the reproduction balancers sold by the aftermarket.

Buy new.

At a glance it looked like a common balancer.

Not a problem. I was trying to show the crappy repair on it. Honestly, I might still use an aftermarket item if this it too expensive to repair. I want to try to keep it original looking, but perfectly willing to use other parts - especially if it improves the reliability.

Tom, I'm curious, did your RAV dampener fail like mine, or were you having it rebuilt proactively? Unfortunately, I don't know the story behind this failure - whether it was jacked on or failed during racing. I'm just suspicious the center hub is not strong enough to handle the increased weight.

I noticed it was a V balancer.Mine had a cracked key way,sent a good hub with mine.Its on my engine right now.Tom

Very interesting. Perhaps these hubs really aren't strong enough to handle the extra weight. I was planning to send a good factory hub with mine as well.
