Send a PM to Jon Hargrove at the Carb Shop and ask him if one of his Thermoquads (like the one he sold me years ago), would be a good carb for you.
The one I have is new and never used (from his shop) it is not one of the 1000 cfm thermoquads. Tom V. . |
Thank you for the complement Tom.
But you know as well as I there is no one size fits all that works for all. A different cam, different exhaust, an engine needing to be rebuilt, and possibly the price of tea in China ;) will have bearing on how much calibration may or may not be needed. The 9800 TQ (800 CFM) will work well with a stock Pontiac 400 that is broken in, but not abused. And while I am not trying to dissuade a prospective customer, the Rochester Q-Jet is an excellent carb. And there are sufficient really sharp folks on this forum to help the OP determine WHY his secondaries won't open, and fix the issue. But yes, I have a Competition 850 CFM thermoquad on my GTO 350. The biggest problem I have with it is that first gear is totally useless under wide open throttle condition. Insufficient traction. Jon. |
I had a stock '70 Gp with a 400 that had a cranky Q-jet. I replaced it with a holley 80555-1 carb. the pcv port in the stock intake had to be removed and plugged, but the holley has a port right in the front that I put the pcv hose to. put gas in it and it fired right up on the choke and ran good. I was able to drive away cold, with the choke on, without any fuss. eventually, I tweaked the choke setting and mixture screws, but it was good right out of the box.

You can send your carb up here to NH and I can make it work right for you. PM sent |
Just get an EFI throttle body unit from Holly or even better FiTech.
Sorry, couldn't resist!! |
I had good out of the box functionality with my custom Q-Jet from SMI. I wont claim that he gets right dead nuts everytime though.
100% honestly, if you are looking for something you don't have to mess with, you would seem a tailor made customer for one of the self learning throttle body injection systems. |
Sean Murphy, just like Jeff (shaker455), Cliff, or Jon could all get you fixed up with your carb issues. The Pontiac World has a lot of options.

Drop it off on your way up.
I'm only few mins from New England Dragway. I have plenty of Pontiacs to live test it on once fixed. |

If your deal starts, and idles, then 95% done.
That last 5% is simple tuning or Accel pump repair. |
Looks like the idea solution to the issue.

Agree, Shaker455 does nice work.
