Drums to dics

Hey guys got a 70 Catalina trying to convert my drums to this what can I do

Mark G 05-08-2020 10:38 AM

I would leave it alone nothing wrong with drum brakes. JMO

I would convert the front if they are drum, look at another GM body that came with front disc and use that set up. May require different spindles too

I used Master Power Brakes to convert my 64 Catalina front brakes. Came as a complete kit with the master cylinder. It was a very simple install kit. But beware of the cheap bearings they supply. It cost me a stock spindle. After that I converted the bearings to a good Timken bearing and haven't had an issue since.

Strange on the front 10in drums on the rear .I had disc on the rear but hated the feel of the pedal. I worked at Midas for years as a brake tech I like drum brakes I know I could save weight with disc on the rear but not for me .

Agree. I felt mine actually stopped better with the 4 drums vs the 4 Wilwoods.

The guy that used to be a tech at Midas says use drum brakes on your race car. I would definitely take his advice.

He never said he had a race car .. .But my buddy runs 9.50 with his firebird drums on every corner stop just fine.. Pay attention

I run 4 drums on my race car and it stops fine. Never felt the need to go to disc.

Drum brakes suck! They have good bite under light pedal. Try to do hard stops and they are horrible. My car had factory power drums. I switched to B-body 12' discs and tall spindles. Went with manual master cylinder. I left the drums on the rear for now. Brakes feel great and no booster. Plus discs are MUCH easier to work on.

Midas is one of the biggest ripoff houses in the business btw.

If you keep drum brakes give strong consideration to upgrading the brake pads to a higher performance level. When I had drums these are what we used, others here might have suggestions for other similar companies as well.
