64 GTO, help a veteran not get ripped off
 

There is a 64 GTO local to me owned by a veteran who no longer can drive the car. About 5 years ago it was running and driveable. Been sitting since. He is no longer able to take care of himself and others are trying to settle his estate. They've been offered $2500 for the car but I think it is worth more. Take a look and let me know what you think. It is stated but not yet proven that the car is numbers matching. Don't know anything beyond what is in the pictures but we are working on getting a peek under the hood, in the trunk, under the carpet and a picture of the cowl tag.

More to come as we can gather the info.

-power brakes
-power windows
-automatic
-vinyl top
-air conditioning

I'm guessing power steering too given the other options. I'd also guess this a 4-bbl car but no proof one way or another yet.

To me, the hood alone could be worth $1500 (I sold one years ago for $2000 which had already been made perfect and was in primer).

Not sure what info you are looking for, but I’d guess its worth $4,000 - $5,000 as it sits, thinking it’s pretty rusty underneath. As you state, some parts on it have value (although since repop hoods have hit the market I’m not sure OEM hoods are that valuable anymore) but the vinyl top trim is desirable to many. To me - auto trans is not desirable, A/C would be but would take a lot to get updated to work
I think $4k-$5k is fair IMO
Hard to say without laying eyes/hands on it……….

OTOH it needs an interior, doubt AC works (need to see engine). If rusty is probably worth more as parts than a car. If selling and the $2500 is cash, I'd take it. (am am also a vet).

If you think it's worth more, buy it for $2500 and sell it for more. If you're exceptionally charitable, you can give them the profit.

Can they get more for it? Probably? Is it worth the added work/headache to market, etc. to make a couple thousand extra? Probably not.

Is there a clear and easily transferrable title or will there be paperwork to deal with?

Is it located in the middle of nowhere?

Automatic car with so-so (at best) color combo. Not my choice for a resto candidate, but will still float a few peoples' boats.

I think you're correct in assuming 4bbl with the automatic. Lot's of work to make that functional as the interior really is trashed. Assuming a real '64 GTO motor, there is potential for some serious money for that and the hood Then you have fenders, doors and vinyl top trim and miscellaneous other parts.

My '64 GTO convertible was similar to this, but it was a convertible with the original M20. I only paid $600.00 for it, but that was back in 1992.

I hate saying it' might be a parts car, but unless it's somebodies dream car because of how it left the factory, it may not be worth the cost to restore. Just depends on how solid the car is after further inspection.

Also a vet and hope that you can help get fair value for the car.

I'm not in any way interested in buying the car, just trying to help some non-car people put a proper value on the car. It has a clear title from what I am told. Old guy has had it since 1970 or so.

There's plenty of surface rust, but that's not a big deal. Any idea of how much actual body and frame rust there is that can't be seen in the photos? Floors, trunk pan, fenders, quarter panels, etc.

8 to 10k is what I’m seeing.

The $2500 buyer is seeing dollar signs and rightfully so.

You’ll never get the true market value without working for it. If you don’t sell before you’re too old and incapacitated you get 25 cents on the dollar if you’re lucky.

Ok if don't want to put a few grand into it offer at $5k and see what happens. Trim tag and 79J match a GTO 389 4bbl Automagic (2 speed) but interior really lets it down.

Where is the car at. Must be a sunny state cause interior and paint look really fried.

You'd definitely have to be seriously committed to take this car on. Power windows is awesome! Don't see that much.

BTW back in the day many added power windows, not hard. Best get PHS documentation.

No idea yet, more pictures to come. At some point I may get to see it in person since it is local to me. Car is in Nebraska.

I'd say $10k to the uneducated buyer/hobbyist who thinks they can put 20k into it and have a car worth $40k. In reality its probably more like put $40k into it and have a car that is worth $35k. $10k is where I would start if the car will run and move on its own Parting the car out has some easy initial wins, but then a long road to getting rid of the rest of the stuff.

I have an entire rust free Tempest front clip (minus the hood), trunk lid, and passenger door. Hmm... See the serious rust at the bottom of the dash? That concerns me that the thing is a total loss. Driver side fender looks really bad too. Have to see this in person to know for sure. Could be a really cool patina car aka B-man lol.

Take the $2500 & be done with it , unknown condition = big mysteries.

It's 2021, and '64 GTOs are not getting any easier to find in any condition. This is a complete car that looks very restorable, even if it has some of the typical rust. It would be a shame to part out a complete '64 like this just because it has some needs. Personally, I'd list it for $5k and let it go for anything above $4k. But that's just me.

Having a hard time believing the "ran when parked 5 years ago" story based on those pictures.

As has been said - more info is needed. Is it indeed "numbers matching?" Is "original paint" worth anything if none of the paint is left?

The lower corners of the back window look bad.
