Simple Horn Question... 66 Bonneville
 

So my horn doesn't work on my '66. I found the plug for the relay, but no relay, so I bought one. Nope.

Next I figured I'd check the horns directly.

Uh.. Hmmm.. Where are they? Or where should they be? I looked all around the front end. Behind the bumper. Up behind the grill. In the fenders. I'll be damned if I can find them, mounting spots, or wiring. Which is weird because my car is mostly complete and pretty unmolested. (I'm the 3rd owner). Who removes the horns??? Maybe that's why the relay was gone??

Here are your horn locations on the core support and the wiring for them. 66 Chassis service manual.

Did you wire it directly to the battery?

As depicted in the diagrams above, they should be behind the grill mounted to the core support. You'd see them in a millisecond if they were there, as they're not exactly hidden.

Conveniently timed question, however, as I have a related follow-up question. Can I test them just by connecting to a spare car battery? Or will that do something bad to them? Sorry if it's a stupid question. Electrical is not my area of expertise.

Yes. Expect a spark as these things pull a fair amount of current.

Thanks for that....That is exactly what I needed. Turns out they were right there like they should be, not sure how I missed them. (Lots of dust/dirt/bad angle...old age..whatever... I did think I'd looked there, but maybe I just didn't look high enough.) It was kind of odd though, that the passenger side one was severely damaged. The horn opening was bent pretty severely, but I can't even imagine how anything got back there to damage it. I had to get my boy to help me remove them as the only access I could find was between the gap in the bumper and my wrists just didn't fit...

Looks like mine weren't working due to a broken wire somewhere between the horns and the relay.. That's going to be a pain to get to also I'm sure.
