Reasonably priced timing light for MSD ignitions
 

Hey everybody,

I have researched old threads about Timing lights for MSD 6AL ignitions and I wonder what the latest opinions are on reasonably priced units?

My flaming River unit worked well a few times and still doesn't function now above 2000 RPM and at lower RPMs is all over the place.

I just need a straight up unit with no timing advance or extras for MSD 6AL.

I was using an 30+ year old - my trusty Craftsman- sears chrome timing light on a new motor with MSD 6AL old version. the timing seemed to keep retarding - so keep advancing.

Then blew a head gasket and damaged block on a NEW motor.

A racer friend got the flaming river to work with the MSD and also on his race car - bought one and worked for a couple years.

Could the new Firecore wires make it hard to read the signal?

I could do the craftsman again with a trustworthy part #?

Thanks for all your input and the number for the old craftsman that you suggested Bill Eveland and other guys who like the old craftsman.

Thanks to mgarblick For the suggestion of the sun timing of my as I ordered that off eBay and we will see how it works.

i use an old Actron cheap light that i bought in the 80s
bought a fancy (forgot the brand) timing light, that sucked with any form of MSD boxes
bought an MSD light, same readings as my cheap light, compared my cheap light to a snapon and mattco light they guys at the shop use
it was the same
sent the msd light back, but it did display VERY bright compared to mine, which was only in issue in direct sunlight, but mine works absolutely fine
i've tried this on various MSD boxes/cars/etc...

My main sticker was faded and wore off anyway for a part number. Same as ebay add. But the made in USA sticker was clearly visable sigh. Back when things lasted . ...

I also use the old chrome Craftsman analog dial back lights. Have 2 of them here and they work well enough on the MSD equipped cars. They are at least 30 years old so can't say for sure if they even make them like this anymore.
