78 Trans AM Horn designations?
What does the “A” mean on the side of a 78 Trans AM Horn? I do not see any other markings on either of mine that tell you if it’s a high or low horn? Just an upper case A.
Hitmans forum says F note is high and D note is low but that is not marked anywhere on the horns, neither is an H for high or an L for low. Just an A. |
It's a High-A note horn. Original parts listings said this one didn't exist until 80-81 models. High-C, Low-D and Low-F were the others.

1892164 is the original GM part number for the A note horn. It is listed in several parts books preceding 1980.

And for a 78 F model?

Thank you I have two of these but bench tested they sound different. We sanded them off good to test them at first the original one tested bad no sound so I bought one, that just sounds weird more like a foreign car horn. Then we re tested the original and it worked for a brief second sounding different, but both had those numbers on them. Weird!! |
You're welcome

Thank you! |
Does it have a bracket attached or just like Canamman's pic?
|
The threaded on bracket with nut was a service parts exclusive. I have taken and drilled out the spot welds on both horns, and swapped the original bracket on the new horn.

That horn on e bay is brand new the TA isn’t going to be a concourse resto to pay $75 bucks for one plus $14 shipping. We saw a video on YouTube how to restore them, we took one apart and it was so rusted it had pin holes in the metal.
|
The bracket isn't for a Firebird anyway.

Like I said, you need to reuse your ORIGINAL bracket, as GM wasn't going to offer several service replacement horns. Never had any luck rebuilding them. They never sound or look right afterwards. |

Thank you! |
They made a few of these over the years, I'd say there's a few used horns too. Just depends where they've been sitting as to what is now inside them.
