‘63 Axle Question
 

I keep reading old articles that claim the revisions to the ‘63 rear suspension included adding an outer u-joint to the rear axles to eliminate the large camber changes associated with a swing axle. Was this really done? My ‘63 axles do not have an outer joint, so either it’s bad information, or there is a ‘61-‘62 suspension in my car. Any information would be appreciated.

I believe the added u joint was for '63 Corvette and 65 Corvair.

Thank you, Keith. I feel sure you are right. I looked through the '63 Service Manual, and there is only an inner u-joint shown on the axles.

Early Corvair had the same rear axle set up as our tempests. 65 and later use a double u-joint and trailing arm hub assembly that kept the camber in line. If you can find a corvair specialist, he can set you up with the axles, hubs and trailing arms. You will need to weld a reinforced mounting plate to the body. It can be done I did it…

That would be a cool modification, but I'm already nearing completion of a complete rear IRS subframe assembly to transplant into mine.

We used a 66 corvair rear ended for the transplant. We cut and modified the 62 tempest upper transaxler mount with the corvair upper to hold the spring cradle and shock tower. Welded a reinforcement plate to the back side of the rear seat area for the trailing arms. You had to play with the dimensions as each setup was not the same(?). This was preform at California Corvair in Chino, Ca.
