My Latest Craft Project

I've always liked live edge wood pieces and have thought many times about trying my hand at making something.

About 3 - 4 weeks ago, we were at "Gold Rush" in Rochester, which is a semi annual flea/craft market.

One of the vendors always has live edge wood for sale and this year we were there near closing time on Sunday. He offered us a "So I won't have to haul it home again price" - 40% off his original asking price (we had looked at it earlier in the day).

This is what we bought:

It's a raw piece of oak that I had a vision for...

This is our new coffee table for our sunroom:

Bought the legs on Amazon, multiple coats of pourable epoxy glaze and I think it came out pretty good for my first attempt.

The Amish do that here with select odd pieces of wood like that. And they get big bucks for the furniture they make with it. I saw a table last Saturday with that kind of wood, rough cut but the top was finished, that was 3' wide x 6' long and cost $3200.00. Chairs not included. :faint:

You did a very nice job with the slab. Did you make the legs too?

Aside from being functional, it serves as a nice decor. Love it.

The costs of the project:

Wood - $120.00

Legs - $75.00, IIRC (purchased from Amazon - fyrfyter1, my welding skills are extremely crude)

Epoxy Glaze Coat - $70.00 (still have about half of it left)

Miscellaneous (sanding pads, cheap brushes, containers for measuring the 2 part epoxy...) - $15.00

Many hours of labor to get it done to my satisfaction - Priceless.

Looks nice!
If you’re ever down in Westby, there’s a place called The Big Old Red Shed. Last time I was there a vendor had mucho pieces of live edge wood like that. Don’t remember prices as I was looking for other items at the time.

I'm moving to Holmen next year, so Westby would be fairly close. The guy I bought this piece from is in Caledonia (MN), which is even closer to Holmen. Good to know about 2 sources less than 1 hour away though for comparison shopping...
