Trivia time

Each of these snowflakes was available on a different Pontiac. Which were they ? Which one is missing ?

bird72 11-18-2021 12:05 PM

There are actually 2 variations of the lower right in the lip edge. More trivia.

and many variations on color. How many know why there was a redbird but not a bluebird.

Who really cares? ;)

I have 8 WS6 in gold.

Yep!

Upper left looks like 13" FWD used on the Phoenix, upper right 13" RWD used on Astre & Sunbird's, Middle is 14X7 used on Firebirds? Bottom left 15X7 Used on F, G, B, & A bodies, and lower right is 15X8 used on WS6 equipped T/A's & Formula's. But I don't know what one is missing

padgett 11-18-2021 03:52 PM

Close: middle is 14x6 used on A, B, and G bodies. Pretty sure 15" was Firebird only and was available in most colors (natural, gold, red, blue,...) 13x6 on upper left is 5x100, right is 4x100. Rest are 5x120.7 (4 3/4). Thought there was a 5x127 (5") for big cars but could not find one.

Had 14x6 on front and 15x7 on rear of last Corvair.

Something to do with the Blue Bird school busses and using the name hence the use of Skybird instead.

And is the missing flake the 15x7 later variation used 79-81 f-bodys?

What I suspect bird is referring to, is the 15 x 8 wheel. It has the deeper dish with a lip on the outside. There were a couple of manufacturers of that wheel, the webbing is a different size from wheel to wheel.

camerjeff 11-18-2021 06:27 PM

They never made a 5X5 bolt pattern Snowflake that I know of, one of the reasons I don't have them on my 78 Catalina Wagon.

padgett 11-18-2021 06:34 PM

Thought back in the day a friend had a set of 5x5s on a big wagon but was in the last century.. Have a couple of stacks that need sorting but mostly bought 15x8s for my Judge.

Yes the 1978 only WS6 wheel.

I thought I had seen these on a 2 door 80’s Bonneville once. It was black with a think a dark red vinyl top, red pinstripe and red interior. It had snowflakes on it but maybe the owner swapped axles/discs?

Yes, they had snowflakes on some of the late '70s B-bodies... But apparently there were two different bolt patterns available- on the cars, not the wheels. Heavy- duty suspension and wagons got the 5x5 pattern and lesser models got 4 3/4. At least that's my understanding. My son has had two '77 Bonnevilles and the were both 5x5.

Yes, there is a later 15x7 that is more open... and significantly lighter than the one in the picture above.

There is also a snowflake that was 6" wide but still have 5x4 3/4 bolt pattern.

I have a set of these I wanted to use on my car trailer but I would have to change all the hubs and it is difficult to find hubs with that bolt pattern not to mention trailer brake parts like drums.

Significant weight savings when compared to either the Honeycomb or the Rally II.

Pontiac also had aluminum rear drums on some of the late 70's (I think) Bonneville.

You are correct. In the John Gunnell book " 75 years of Pontiac Oakland there is a picture on page 517 shows a 1981 Bonneville "B" body with snowflakes. I always thought B bodies were 5X5 ( Never say Never). Reading the caption under the picture it indicates the weight of the base Bonneville to be 3003lbs. Which could justify 4 3/4, but why do this on a last year car before the downsized G Bonneville comes the next year.

camerjeff 11-21-2021 02:16 PM

I am not exactly sure what the criteria of 5X4.75 vs 5X5 wheel bolt pattern on the 77-81 Pontiac B-bodies. But yes all Wagons have 5X5, the couple of parts cars I have had with trailer towing packages (both 78 sedans) also have 5X5, but one had a Buick 350 and the other had a Pontiac 400 under the hood.
I did have a 301 powered 79 Catalina coupe that had 5X4.75 though

bird72 11-21-2021 02:17 PM

I've had 2 WS6 TA's (1978's) so I like those rims and know the handling benefits. But for some reason, I also like the look of the 7 inch snowflakes on a TA, They showcase the snowflake pattern well.
