Is there any information on a breakdown of how many 67 abodies made by specific colors?

The reason I am asking, I see from time to time on cars for sale is "rare" color....

Another reason is, I have a plum mist 67 basket case car and would like to know how many were painted that color in 67.

Definitely not many Plum Mist cars produced but have no idea how many. It's a strange color and my Plum Mist GTO became a Regimental Red car back in the early eighties right after I purchased it. Today I'd be fighting myself to leave it the stock color but it was an easy choice back then.

I contemplated changing the color back one day and saved a few photos of other Plum Mist cars. Didn't note who the owners were, and these could be PY member cars.

Pontiac didn't track production numbers by the color that I've ever been aware of.
That task is reserved for our resident OCD members ;)

Haha! I don't think I'm OCD, (at least that status of cleanliness in my garage indicates no OCD) but I do make it a weird hobby to collect '67 GTO trim codes.


I have a chart from last year with a breaddown of exterior colors by popularity (in percentages).


I've collected a bit less than 1 percent of '67 GTO's made. So take this for what it's worth.



Plum Mist is second to last in colors.

Incidentally, I'd love a Plum Mist car.

It mentions "popularity" -- so was this a pole on favorite colors voted on, or does it have ties to possible production percentages?

Have a hard time believing that Gold took the number one spot with either a vote or production number and thought black would have been much higher up the list.

Me saying "popularity" in the chart was probably not a good word to use. But the chart is based on actual data for 667 cars. Basically an almost 1 percent sample of 1967 GTO production.

Statisticians would have something to say about how accurate the color break down is for a 1 percent sample (population mean, sample mean, error bars...etc), but I'll bet the chart is not too far off from actual color break down. So, my stats say 1.6% of the 667 sample were Plum Mist. If you extrapolate, that would be about 1400 of all produced 67 GTOs were Plum Mist. (See statisticians for how accurate that is)

And anecdotally, for the years I've soaked in 67 GTO lore, I'd certainly believe Signet Gold, Regimental Red and Tyrol Blue were the top colors produced.

I'd also say Starlight Black, Fathom Blue and Plum Mist are pretty rare beasts.


If the PHS folks ever get really bored, I'd imagine they are the ones who could crank out the most accurate estimates for exterior colors and trim codes since they likely have almost all production records (billing history cards).

Black and Plum were the hardest cars to find for 67 GTO's in my area when I used to beat the bushes and all the old timer Jyards. Gold and Red definitely most abundant.
I wanted a Black or Plum car for a long time, only found one of each, and they were not acceptable.
So I kept ol' Red.

Same experience here. The only Plum Mist car I had seen was owned by my brother. Mine is Signet. I have an Elkhart Blue 67 Corvette, that color being 2nd rarest. Black was the least used of 10 colors offered that year. The colors that were the lowest production are the ones sought after today.

Ok, thanks for the feedback. Phs should do some homework so Pontiac enthusiasts can appreciate their rides more. That info would probably increase the value of all colors in the marketplace.

With the population (production numbers) and your sample size the figures you provided are pretty accurate. Margin of error would between 3%-4% for a 95% confidence factor. Great information. For the record my current car was signet and my previous car was regimental red...the two most popular colors!
