1966 Assembly Line
 

I usually post pics like this in the vintage photo thread but thought this was a good 1966 picture for anyone that owns one.

Thanks for that great picture. Having owned a number of 66 B body Pontiacs, I really think they were just great cars. Solid, Beautiful body, sharp, high quality interiors. Dual exhaust on the one front of line. The next one in line, single exhaust, Turbo 400, no AC. That's about all I could tell. Very cool.

What a crummy job.

Usually it was the lower seniority guys that ended up in the pit.

Getting dripped on all day, and dodging all the stuff everybody topside drops on you (wrenches, fasteners, water, etc).

If you are a tall person it makes it all the worse.

But - if you like some solitude, you can make it work.

I had a diminutive black man as a pit repairman named Garfield Hardy.

Garfield was one of those guys that would work every second of overtime that you would give him.

Deer season in Michigan just decimates the labor force and so those of us that remained behind could and would work double shifts of 16 or 20 hour days to keep the line running.

One deer season I could see Garfield down there, dozing on his stool.

Wanting to awake him discretely I hollered down "Garfield! What does your wife think about you working all this overtime?"

He didn't look up or open his eyes. He replied "...she say 'see ya later honey - I'm goin' shoppin'".

My family has adopted that saying as our own.
