Master brake cylinder and brake booster

4 Attachment(s)
Need advice my brake booster is original but as a kid I painted it black yes my favorite color. Im know slowly restoring car. It sat for 30 years with the number matching rebuilt original.engine. taking it out but once out I want to.restore other things. Does the booster go.bad?what about proportion value. Is rebuilding original better than repop? Any recommendations on having it rebuilt or am I just spinning my wheels? I.believe my master cylinder isn't original but do have an eb. Need advice on this .

Don’t waste your time and money with a repro, do it once and have the original rebuilt. Sent mine to https://www.brakeboosters.com. Sent my master cylinder to https://whitepost.com/#hometop

That looks outstanding

I agree. I thank you guys for helping me. Repoo must me junk.

DavesGTO 05-28-2022 02:17 PM

Repro didn’t last long or operate like the original. Price depends on how much polishing needs to be done, send a rusty core and price will go way up. I have seen some that were plated without getting the rust pits out and it looks terrible. Best to send a core that is clean. I highly recommend them.

Hmmm ok and does the proportion value go bad? Mine original car has 124k but never changed it out

DavesGTO 05-28-2022 02:56 PM

It can go bad but can be refurbished also. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

+2 on White Post, they rebuilt my prop./combination valve & master cyl. few weeks ago.
Expensive but good turnaround time.

White post did a master for me . Put it in and it leaked. Installed another one and sent it back. They redid it no problem. I did not install it yet. It was for another 67 that I was working on.and the guy wanted the car back.

Definitely bench bleed before install.

All that said, in 70 there are 3 separate pieces that do the work of the " combination Valve" Its been a while since I used White post, and not sure if they check them . Not all are available new. If they do, that would be great. Bench bleed master is great, but I would pressure bleed the system when ready and use Dot 5 synthetic brake fluid.

Thank you Formulabruce!

i also had issue with white post

Ramairnacho 05-29-2022 08:13 PM

Ok white post expensive and issues.. thanks. Engine coming out again it's got zero miles on rebuilt and going to have correct heads back on it.(thanks E) tranny rebuilt at same time but I should have brakes and wiring harness dash do e 1st and guages. Oh a long way to go. I want the drive train done and complete before I paint.

i used whitepost as well, no issues at all...pricing likely similar to any other company that you can find to restore...

On your master cylinder, take out the pistons and look at your cylinder. As long as it is not pitted, you can get a rebuild kit with new piston and do it yourself. White Post and others will install a stainless sleeve to deal with rough cylinders. If your cylinder looks good, just do a light hone to clean it up.

Ramairnacho 05-30-2022 12:01 PM

Anyone know the hone diameter of the cylinder and I'm. Not sure if it can be done with a hand drill. I don't have a shop

68bird400HO 05-30-2022 12:46 PM

You can use a drill and buy the hone at any parts store for maybe $15. Use a little wd40 or something for lube.
