New Edlebrock 4150 Carb

Enough adjustments to really screw things up for me:)

It all sounds great but for the extra 1/2” in height!

Waiting for Tom V’s 2. Centavo”s...

Apparently all are mechanical secondaries?

If you go back and read a bunch of websites on Holley Carbs, (specifically Dominator carbs) you see where a lot of the fastest carbs were 3 circuit carbs converted back to 2 circuit carbs by carb guys like tuner and jmarkaudio.

There is a LOT of CARB KNOWLEDGE in this thread:

http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...d.php?t=811891

My impression would be that the "Holley Clone with 4 carb circuits" is primarily a Marketing exercise.

Years ago, a lot of Holley carbs had two Emulsion orifice passages on each half of each metering block and they worked very well.

Then someone in NASCAR thought they could save a bit of fuel (important in NASCAR) by going to a 3 emulsion orifices on each side metering block carb.

Then Holley came out with a 4 emulsion drillings on each side of the carb metering block. And finally 5 emulsion holes on each side.

I worked on a 8 emulsion hole on each side for a NASCAR team Ford was sponsoring one time so SVO could determine if it was necessary. Have posted about this in the past.

So now we have Edelbrock making a 4 circuit Holley Clone carb.

What do you think my response will be? 77TRASHCAN, LOL.

If it sells carbs for Edelbrock, then it is good for Edelbrock.
Is it needed? Like a 3 circuit Dominator Carb vs a 2 circuit Dominator Carb??????)

If they sell more carbs then that is your choice if you spend the cash.

You can make massive amounts of HP with old 2 circuit Dominators, if tuned properly and the CFM of the carb is correct for the application.

the more i mess with carburetors, the more i think everyone should just buy a 4781 or a 3310, set the idle and never touch it again.

Again!KISS!Tom

I made the 3 circuit Dominator mistakes years ago for a race only car and after a crazy amount of time trying to get the car to leave well I went over to a 2 circuit type.

Maybe they got it right this time , but let someone else be the test subject!

X 3 Yup buy a classic Holley in good shape..4779/4780/4781 or a 3310 or similiar or my favorite 80496 classic 950 HP..keep it simple, proper setup..easy.

i think the problem is that carbs are so easy to get to. just sitting on top, just waiting for you to mess with it ... you gotta be committed to play around with a camshaft, you just gotta be bored for a few minutes to screw up your carburetor!

More airbleeds and they put the ifr at the top of channel.pos

People have been converting a bad idea (High Mount IFRs) back to the old standard IFR Position used by #3310 and #4779 carbs for many years without
and issues. The Dominator Guys have been converting 3 circuit Dominators back to 2 Circuit carbs for the same reasons.

So now the "E-Guys" come up with a carb that uses a 3 circuit design that did not work well and added a additional 4th circuit design to the carb.

The E-Guys learned their lesson about copying a Holley design in the past with the BG stuff. Barry built some nice stuff that worked but they are out of business. Unfortunately this effort (4 circuit carb) appears to be a pure marketing exercise vs staying with a known 2 circuit Dominator design.

Just saying. But they had to do something to increase sales.

+ 4, 5 and 6.

I spent a LOT of time with those carbs early in my learning curve and found them to be excellent and didn't need a lot of help anyplace. At swap meets and such just look for the down-leg boosters, LIST number and build dates. Aside from finding the left front corner of the baseplate cracked, broken or completely broken off on occasion they are typically in good rebuildable condition otherwise........

I was watching a video about the new edelbrock. They mentioned that rumor is Holley is dropping carbs and selling strictly fuel injection in the next 3-4 years.

I saw that Uncle Tony video. Like everything else he says take it with a grain of salt. Holley owns the Quick Fuel/Brawler line so maybe that will be for carb sales and the Holley brand will be FI? I just can’t see that company walking away from that much revenue. Maybe TomV has some inside info?
All the press is hyping this E4150 like it’s some kind of revolutionary evolution of the carb. 3 circuits, 1/2” taller, good luck with that.

Posted this many years ago:

1976 time period. Chuck Gulledge worked at Holley, Mike Urich was a Executive in the company, Holley was sending people to work every Drag Event to rebuild their carbs for free: (Most just needed a fresh gasket kit and a conversion BACK TO THE STOCK HOLLEY CALIBRATION. Marty Brown was a VP at Holley. Marvin Benoit was a High Speed Dyno Operator. Barry Grant was working for Holley, (if I remember correctly) at the Watervalley Production plant.

Lots of carb knowledge there.

Edelbrock was not selling carbs then. Carter was, as was Autolite and Rochester Products. Weber was still Weber and selling a few smaller engine 2 and 3 barrel carbs.

Production and Sales were still ok and Holley OEM was designing and making emissions
components for the Big 3 under that division of Holley.

So then Holley OEM was sold to Borg Warner, the Holley Carb Guys were moved to the south central USA, and the Engineering Center at 9 mile and Hoover was being closed and Holley/Borg Warner later sold the property. The buildings were gone.

But there were a few Carb Guys out still there: Braswell, Chuck Gulledge, Marty Brown and Marvin Benoit, John Reed, for example.

But before Holley was sold off and moved south, some "MANAGEMENT" at Holley were talked into the high mount IFRs. They HAD to make changes to a working design to sell more carbs as it was a Marketing Game, not an Engineering Game any longer.

The OEM side (former Holley employees) under Borg Warner was making a living and getting involved with Turbochargers.

The aftermarket side (of Holley) "down south" filed for bankruptcy several times.
Marty Brown/Marvin Benoit & Chuck Gulledge started their own Carb companies.

So now Vic E is gone, His daughter is gone, Wall Street Investors have bought the company and the investors want something to put cash back in their pockets.

So now we have a 4 circuit carb for people who can't properly tune a Holley Two Circuit carb. Or a Carter AFB or a Weber, or a Rochester Q-Jet or Tri-Power.

And the people with Carb Knowledge are walking away or shutting down their companies every day.

Life goes on. But if you are into the "Big Harvey" syndrome (mine is bigger than yours) buy the 4 circuit carb asap.

Edelbrock

Ferdinand Porsche, (Ferry Porsche), was known for thoughtful quotes as well as legendary sports cars. One of his quotes that stuck with me now for over 45 years is this one: "The best design is the simplist design that works!". I never forget that. So if a 2 circuit carburetor works well and delivers fuel properly for all your engine's needs, why do you need a 4-circuit one?. Based on the fact that Edelbrock has managed to take two good basic carburetor designs, the Carter AFB, and AVS and produce a knock-off that barely operates as a working carburetor without hours and hours on the dyno just to get them within 90% of a Q-jet or genuine Holley. I would have zero confidence they can do any better with their knock-off Holley. I hope I am wrong.

I always look at the more adjustments the more things to screw up!

"I was watching a video about the new edelbrock. They mentioned that rumor is Holley is dropping carbs and selling strictly fuel injection in the next 3-4 years."

Fuel injection? Investing in batteries would be a better idea. Once millions of discarded electric vehicles fill the junk yard we'll be doing electric powered retrofits not LS swaps!......
