68 Washer Nozzle Hardware
 

Looking at my hood it appears the nozzles are held on by one screw into a normal hole, and one screw into a square plastic insert. That seems odd.

I see the Ames 68 hardware kit has four screws and four inserts.

My hood may or may not be 68.

Anyone have clarification on this before I order yet another incorrect part?

Mine has a METAL insert for each screw and the assembly manual shows that to be correct for '69 too (page 78) if that means anything. The fact that yours are plastic makes me wonder about the year as well. They didn't use much plastic on the '68. That only leaves 1970. However, if they were going to change something, I can't imagine why they would just get rid of one?

What size are your screws? Mine looks to be original and they are tiny. Maybe a #8 and maybe 3/8" length with a 1/4" hex head. The snap nuts are correspondingly small of course. Just wondering if someone may have opened the holes up on yours for a bigger screw?

The Ames catalog calls out a specific set of hardware for the 68 that includes the plastic inserts.

Here is a photo of the nozzle attachment area, and one of the date code for the hood ... which I have no idea how to decode. And yes the hole for the screw is quite small, and the square for the insert is about half the size of the typical examples you see for like inner fender applications. After looking at the Ames product I realized it does cover 68-72 and has four plastic inserts and four screws which would cover any combination of screws and inserts .. doesn't show any clip on nuts. I couldn't tell from the 69 assembly manual if it was showing an insert or a clip on nut. Hood uses only two screws per hood scoop ... I think that might narrow down the year.

I believe you have a '70 hood. That year washer squirter used a tab that went into the square hole and a single screw into the round hole. It was a savings of two screws per hood and the time to put in the second screw. Check your brace just in back of the hood latch catch., for '69 and '70 there was a pressed in clearance area to clear the new for '69 and up plastic shroud. A '68 hood's brace went straight back without the clearance area. Hope this helps, Paul.

Here is a photo of the underside of the hood (69-70?), and the Nozzles I have. The two matching nice ones have witness marks that appear to show that only one screw was used .. and it doesn't match where the screw holes are on the hood.

(update) Bit more research and it appears my two nice nozzles are 68 type, and yes hood is 70.

I'm guessing I can make them work regardless, even if I just use one screw, or some combination of the screws and inserts.

I guess you have it all figured out so this is of no help, but I just ordered those Ames parts including nozzles the other week and they popped right in the square holes I had rather nicely. Not sure what they were made of to begin with but the plastic parts from Ames fit well. I did have some plastic remnants left in those holes that appeared very old, but they may have already been replaced years ago.

Good to know, I still have to order the kit from Ames so nice to know they fit.
