Looking for my Dad's 78 TA SE?
I'm trying unsuccessfully to truly figure out the model of Trans Am that my father owned. My Father purchased it from a good friend of his named Charlie Box in i believe 1985 or so. It was a 1978 TA it was black on black on black. The trim on the car was not gold though it was a metallic blue. All the writing from the side of the shaker hood to the pinstripe on the side and the TRANS AM on the back were written in this electric blue The car was a manual Hurst shifter on the floor and I always thought it was a 5 speed for some reason.It did not have snowflake rims. The car had power windows, power locks, a chrome formula steering wheel and the dash was silver It also had a 8track player.We were always told that the car was some sort of special edition and had been upgraded in some way.I've yet to see one online with this package. Oh and very importantly there was NO chicken on the hood and no ttops. I cannot even find a photo of a 78 TA with a hurst shifter on the floor.Can anyone help me.

Hood Bird was an option. I do not remember blue lettering on a black TA in 78 so it may have been repainted and used the blue lettering. My factory black paint started fading in 1980 so i repainted it in late 80s.

Every owner of a black TA believed theirs was a special model. Every owner of a non-black TA believed theirs was a special model repainted.
Lots of custom detailing in the 80s, trim to wheels to paint to decals. Unless you know the VIN and current owner or similar happens to read it and wants to respond, then no way of knowing you found it even if it matches your recollections. |
Sounds like your dad ended up with a very cool, period correct car. However, I haven’t heard of a factory option like that.

It doesn't sound like an SE. Every single 4-speed Trans Am in 1978 had a Hurst shifter, I don't understand how you haven't been able to find a photo of that online. So far all the silver and chrome you are describing and the lack of snowflakes further that it was just a standard Trans Am. The final nail in that coffin is that there was not a single hard top SE produced in 1978.
