Pontiac 8.2 4 pinion posi units.....ALL JUNK...
 

Sad but we all knew these were not rebuildable. Pontiac serviced these by just replacing the entire unit unlike the Chevrolets where they could change the clutch pack. I have gone thru (13) 4 pinion units i had here and 11 are junk / extremely wore out. 2 are marginal at best. Once again I have to buy (2) EATON 19674-010 Posi Units which have now steadily climbed to $695 plus shipping.
BEWARE of the trick wording on the Ebay Eaton "Style" units from China...Obviously not the same. I remember the Auburn Clutch style available years back but think those are a thing of the past.
Any other options / ideas?
Just bought an Eaton for a 68 "F" body 3.90 over the summer. I know these are proven and at the top of the heap.Just curious on others experiences.

I replaced my ‘67 Firebird’s Saf-T-Trak with an Auburn limited slip unit about 20 yrs ago. Are you saying these are no longer available?

Ford 9”. From Currie, Quick Performance etc. Bigger investment up front, but much larger selection/better parts to choose from.

You can turn the small end of the cone and at the bottom of the diff housing and then shim between the side gear and the cone for the correct clearance between the pinion gears.

I have a couple very low use 4 pinion posi units here but I agree they are getting hard to find.
I believe I have a way to repair them without turning anything down but I’d have ti test it on some and I don’t have any bad ones .

Kenth...Yes I have seen this done before but most are terribly scored on the friction end of the cone and case not too mention the back sides on the large spider gears. 90+% of these once wore will create great damage on themselves.
Fourthirteen....What I see is the Auburn Units are now clutch style.
HAS ANYONE HAD EXPERIENCE WITH THE NEWER AUBURN CLUTCH STYLE POSI's.
When I asked my axle guy last year about the Auburns he kind of just shrugged his shoulders. His recomendation was the EATON POSI....Again NOT the ebay advertised "Eaton STYLE".
Just wondering as the Auburns are 1/2 the price but that right there may tell the story.
The Eatons are $700 but i guess for such an important part i should not complain...I guess the main complaint is that they WERE under about $550 just a short 2 years ago...

My buddy has a complete 69 A body rear N center section 3.55 gears he would sell put a moser 12 bolt in his car. Don’t know price guessing 1000-1500 it’s ready to install and posi worked great.

I have an NOS 4 pinion unit
Paid dearly for it many years ago
but they were pretty hard to find in good used shape
kicking myself for selling all those 355 posi F and A body rears.

For you rear end experts I have a question. I've read how to change out a rear end to a posi, but have never done it. Can a novice with good mechanical skills handle this?

what was noteworthy of the 4 pinion unit was the case was almost totally enclosed.
This was mainly for strength . Look at the large window in the one above and youll see.

I've used the Eaton 8.2" clutch posi and they are great, I've also used an Auburn cone style and the Eaton is better. I have also rebuilt several 4-pinion Pontiac 8.2" posi untits and some have worked and others worked for a short time. Get an Eaton or replace with a 12-bolt.
