Microsoft Edge Locked and Gone

A heads up..... and don't laugh. No MS Edge to get on the internet isn't funny.

This morning I tried to get on to the internet with Edge. I was locked out. It would not open no matter what I did. I couldn't even get into the Settings list. Or anything else I was hoping to use. I even did a System Restore and that didn't work at all.

I figured that my Zone Alarm antivirus could be the culprit. Nope, even tho I was getting virus blocks on every webpage I went to last night. That wasn't it. So, after trying to start another recovery the Uninstall section popped up. I scrolled to Microsoft Edge and hit the uninstall tab. Figuring that would get rid of Edge altogether and have to take the computer to a repair shop, Repair popped up. I started it and a whole new MS Edge was installed. Now it's working again and I'mmmm Baaack. ;)LOL

So, if you have any problems with trying to get Edge working this should help you fix it. But you need to get into the Uninstall section. That is a must and the one thing that evaded me for 3 hours. By luck it opened so I could fix it.

Make sure you have a back for internet access. Use Opera, Firefox, Safari, Comodo IceDragon, and as a last resort Google Chrome (I hate anything Google). In my estimation Microsoft is falling apart. Even updates.

I hope you never have to go thru this. It's a RPITA.

Google can sit on it and rotate, Microsoft too while we're at it

I've got Edge installed alongside three other browsers ... working fine for me.

Upon Power-up, Edge would start a out 8 "instances" when i got it (~2years ago). Would also run slow and freeze up. Well it seemed to self-heal after 6 months of "being patient".

Now Edge seems to run fine, and i dunno how many instances it starts upon power up. I ought to check.

I don't have issues with Edge but I do know to check for FW updates any time my PC(s) act sluggish or programs start to hang. I do like the Bing search engine and use it more than Google. I really like the daily "Bing page" photos so keep bing.com as my home page.

Brave to me is the best - superb ad, cookie and tracker killing, even with Gmail.

Had a similar problem on my daughter's computer last week. Installed Malwarebytes, which found three infected files that our "regular" anti-virus program and CC Cleaner did not detect. Quarantined and deleted those files and back in business.

Yep, I use Brave for anything important.

Edge is based on Google's Chromium btw..

Both Chrome and Edge are Chromium-based browsers. This means they are built on the framework of Chromium, a free and open-source software created by Google. Chromium is a codebase for developers to create other browsers. These include major browsers like Brave, Opera, and Vivaldi.

As I said above, I HATE Google. I do have Google email tho, but that's going be deleted soon.

I'll more than likely add Firefox as my backup. But Brave sounds good just because of the tracker killer and ad blocker it has.

I would like to get a VPN, if I can find one that's totally free.

crEdge was introduced a couple years ago now and yes it is based on the chrome dome engine but it quite different.

Like anything it still needs constant security and version updates however they are separate from Windows Update. You will see a green or orange button in the top right corner indicating it may need an update.

Old "edge" was deprecated and just recently forcibly removed as it wasn't being updated any longer.

Having multiple bowsers can introduce additional attack surfaces you don't necessarily need. Try to pick one you like and ensure it is updating and windows for that matter.

Beware of "flree" anti-v and vpns - they are not worth the cost.

If something is free on the internets, YOU are the product...

I use Firefox exclusively.

I've just downloaded Brave and installed it. Built in security and all my links and email was added. So far it looks great.

When on " EDGE" you are logged into Microsoft and or Google or both at same time.
You don't have to have a Microsoft account to use win 10 or 11, but most people just do it, then they are just another data point for advertisers through Google Leader, or Microsoft ad campaign.

Unless you have a tin foil hat and live in a shack in the woods data will be collected.

Social media, free but useful services, phones, everything is tracked.

Get a real VPN and use reputable services you'll be fine.
