Agree, He has a lot of "correction" there as he is "learning the line" vs the tire capabilities.
Down the road with the right combination, he will be a lot smoother vs correcting for the Piss-Poor tire's capabilities. Tom V. |

Part of it is that he's hitting the curbs and that's tossing him about so he's got to struggle to control the front wheels. Of course, they all do that but I've never noticed that much steering input before.
I've only driven on a road race course once before which was at Road America. They have a thing where let civilians do parade laps between the vintage car races. There was a stated speed limit of I think something like 70 mph which was a joke. There were guys out there just letting it rip. I was in my Superformance Cobra with 490 hp, but since I'm not a race car driver, I kept it pretty mellow. There was a guy in a modern Ferrari that put it into a wall. Seeing that will sober you up real quick. |
I'm kind of glad there isn't any onboard video of me back when I was road racing, I was probably sawing on the wheel a lot more than this guy. :) According to the video title he was on a qualifying lap, so presumably he was pushing it as hard as he could. Also, it's a car with 1960s chassis and suspension design so it's not going to be as sure through the bends as an equivalent modern sports car. I don't know what kind of rubber compound they'e allowed to run in vintage racing either; the tires are probably better than what was used 50 years ago but I suspect they aren't nearlyas sticky as what is used for modern sports cars.

The early Cam Am cars were notoriously bad handling, mainly due to the lousy tires of the era. Imagine how they could have handled IF today’s racing tire technology had been available.

Beautiful car- the color does not do it justice. I also noticed the wheel bouncing around when he hit the curbs. What kind of ratio would a car like this run?

Pretty Much all are in agreement, the guy is working pretty hard to get around the track.
Hitting the curbs happens occasionally when you and another vehicle are fighting for "The Line". Pretty Obvious (with all of the "sawing of the street wheel") that he needs more time in the car with much better tires. He will get there at some point as long as he does not take out another vehicle in his learning cycle. Tom V. |
