78 tires
 

What make and model of tires were available on a new 78 TA? Have 7” wheels and would be interested to see what came on the 8”s as well. I see many adds for the 77s using the uniroyals. Not sure if those were also used on the 78s as well.

The tyres were essentially 'the same' size between the standard rims and wider rims, the equivalent of a 225-70, different brands and options based on the rims and plants, supply.

My 77 had the Goodyear GR-70-15's on it, new. At about 20,000 they were junk. Had tread on them but car drove badly.

Seemed like the 78 8" wheels had HR-60-15's anyone???

As mentioned above, P225/70R15 is the equivalent of the GR-70R15 tire.
I have used several sets of P235/70R15's on my stock Rally-2's. They barely touch the subframe, at the rear z when turned to extreme, not been a problem, though.

Brand could be varied. It depended on time of year, and what supplier they were currently using.

Thanks for the replies. I’m getting modern tires, rather than the popular bf Goodrich, but I would like to make them look period correct by putting the tire decals on whatever brand I buy. Have already used some tire stickers on another car and think they came out alright. We’ll see how it turns out. My initial choice is the Goodyear, just wasn’t sure if they were available. Didn’t want to buy something that is completely out of place.

Coker makes awesome reproduction tires....last I heard were about $350.00 each. Can't imagine how much now...

Kelsey tire makes a reproduction Goodyear Polysteel P225-70R15 for the f-body and Corvettes of that time period. The small RWL tires came out first in 78 then transitioned to the large letters. Coker does not make this tire.

In 79, the Goodyears were installed at Van Nuys and the Uniroyals were installed at Norwood. Maybe that was the same in 78?

My ‘78 from Van Nuys came with the Goodyear 225/70 on 8” wheels.

Small Hurst, a member on this site sells the exact reproduction of the Goodyear tire, no stickers needed. These are not cheap, but balance well, a basically Are the real deal.

Just purchased Kelsey reproduction GR70/15 for my 1977 Formula W-72 & W-50 and very satisfied with the factory stock appearance. Now my original Goodyear spare tire in the trunk matches the other four.

I just bought a set of Year One 15x8 silver snowflake wheels and a set of 255 60 R 15 BF Goodrich tires and man I love the look. It rides and handles better than the old 225 70R 15 tires plus the tires were a little old according to the dates.

Check for clearance at full lock on the front, often starts to rub the sway bar. As easy as adding packing shim to stops on control arms, or not steering that tight.

Do you have more pictures of your Formula?

It looks great - I don't see nearly enough 1975-1981 Formulas.
