Oil filter mount to block.
 

I cannot get it to stop dripping. Any suggestions?

Make sure the bolts are not bottoming out. I've also seen them over tightened and a resulting hairline crack.

Check if housing and block is flat with straight edge also.ive never had one leak( not trying to make you feel bad) Always used stock gasket. Never used any silicone or sealers

Make sure the filter isn't too tight also.

The likelihood of the block not being flat is slim, the flimsy aluminum filter adapter casting would be suspect.

Good chance it’s warped from over tightening, not uncommon. Either sand it flat using sandpaper on a piece of glass or find a new one if it’s too far gone.

Check to make sure it IS the block housing?
The sending unit is usually the culprit of leaks then next the oil filter connection at the housing.

One time I had a filter with a pin hole in it. It was a bad spot weld from the manufacturer. Unlikely, but does happen. Clean it off with brake cleaner and watch it until you find the leak.

I have had senders that worked fine but leaked around the crimp .

Never had them leak until i never had them not leak. Must be the orange silicone sealer.

Bolt lengths are always awesomely set. Been doping the gasket on both sides with orange silicole, thin enough, but result in leakers. Added bonus is the leaker i took off might have a hairline crack. One i put on might be leaking because the header pipe has tell tale oil burn.

Back in the days that the oil filter Mounts didn't leak i used the non-hardening Indian Shellac. But that formula is dead crusty now with Permatex ownership. Afraid to buy & use IH-Shellac for anything anymore.

as mentioned check the housing is flat & not cracked... i always use a very thin layer of ultra black gasket maker on both sides of the gasket to ensure no leaks. not a full bead or too thick as it can ooze into oil passages, just a thin amount smoothed out by your finger so it wont ooze but will fill any small imperfections. torque bolts to spec then let cure overnight. should stay bone dry for decades.

as with everything else gasketed on these engines, retorque after a few heat cycles then check/snug the bolts every couple years.

Mine leaked for years. I thought it was the mating surfaces, but it iurns out I had a small crack between the oil sending unit boss and the mounting surface from overtightening the oil sending unit. As a result the sending unit threads leaked. New adapter solved the problem.

I am gonna have to get a new adapter cause it is just spraying no matter what

Bummer. At least you know now. Easy fix.

This is what I do, too. Just a very thin skim coat of ultra black on both sides of the gasket. Works great, bone dry.

I use Permatex # 2 on stuff like this. Its made for gasket material unlike RTV which IMO is used too much. And you do not have to wait for it to dry.
RTV let me down at the track on a thermostat housing one day and I went away from using it all the time. Kicked it too the curb, These engines came dry for the most part anyway.

People use silicone sealer on everything. NOT needed! Use a spray gasket sealer on thin gaskets. Silicone also gets into all kinds of places it shouldn't.

If it's spraying oil, then it is probably a cracked housing.
(assuming you can see it spraying from the housing and not filter or sensor)


Should be easy replacement.

It is spraying a tremendous amount now after pulling it and replacing gasket and reinstalling. It did not leak on the stand.

You adapter is most likely junk. Try a different one.
